13 editions published between 1950 and 1971 in English and held by 650 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First developed as a tool for the Cross-Cultural Survey, an organization established in 1937 by the Institute of Human Relations at Yale University, this topical outline serves as the key to the assembling and classification in the files of the basic information on a sample of the peoples of the earth. With the ultimate objective of organizing in readily accessible form the available data on a statistically representative sample of all known cultures--primitive, historical, and contemporary--for the purpose of testing cross-cultural generalizations, the outline uniformly classifies material according to seven basic criteria among 79 major divisions of cultural background information. They include: (1) patterned activity, (2) circumstance, (3) subject, (4) object, (5) means, (6) purpose, and (7) result. The actual materials, meant to be used by those concerned with human behavior in broad perspective, are available on microfilm at a number of educational institutions as well as at Yale in the original files. An index of cultural terms is provided. For a companion document see fl 002 033. (rl)

Korean and Japanese women : an analytic bibliographical guide by Hesung Chun Koh( Book )

3 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 279 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a selective bibliography and index of materials on Korean and Japanese women, their history, social and cultural patterns, sex roles, family and kinship patterns, and other characteristics. Designed to assist researchers in the systematic selection of information for descriptive or comparative research on Korean and Japanese women, the bibliography contains about 600 entries, including autobiographies, legal codes, books, journal articles, conference papers, and dissertations in English, Japanese, or Korean, issued between 1789 and 1979. Documents have been assigned identification numbers for convenient cross-reference, and are classified according to five main types of information: time, geographic location, unit of study, and data quality control factors (items about author background, research methodology, and nature of the data, which provide a means for evaluating materials reliability). Several indexes have been generated by combining categories from the information types. The bibliography consists of two books. Book one presents abbreviated citations by historical time periods and provides five analytical subject indexes; indexes of selected characteristics of a document's author, research design, and population under study; and author and title indexes. Book two provides complete bibliographic information and annotations for each document. (Author/MJL)

Another section on teaching applications includes use of the Files for training in research, for individual or class projects, and for the teachers' own preparation. Sections on the use and organization of the Files discuss methods for retrieving information based on the classification and indexing of information in the files, given a particular research problem, and describe the physical format of the files. Other components of the hraf system include an orientation film reference tools, and a computerized archive. A reference section and appendices containing research topics and explications of the system's technicalities conclude the guide. (Jh)
