Love and hatred : the troubled marriage of Leo and Sonya Tolstoy by William L Shirer( Book )

15 editions published between 1993 and 1999 in English and Chinese and held by 926 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents a dual biography of Russians Leo and Sonya Tolstoy, offering a study of a long and stormy marriage between two remarkable individuals and the impact of their complex relationship on Leo's (1828-1910) literary work. Leo is considered a master of realistic fiction and one of the world's greatest novelists. He is best known for two long novels, War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). Leo and Sonya's marriage was marked from the outset by sexual passion and emotional insensitivity when Tolstoy, on the eve of their marriage, gave her his diaries detailing his extensive sexual past and the fact that one of the serfs on his estate had borne him a son. Even so, their early married life was ostensibly happy and allowed Tolstoy much freedom to compose his novels with Sonya acting as his secretary, proof-reader and financial manager. However, their latter life together has been described as one of the unhappiest in literary history. Tolstoy's relationship with his wife deteriorated as his beliefs became increasingly radical. This saw him seeking to reject his inherited and earned wealth, including the renunciation of the copyrights on his earlier works. The Tolstoy family left Russia in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution

"Through his broadcasts for Edward R. Murrow on CBS Radio, William Shirer was a masterful chronicler of the events in Europe that led up to World War II."--BOOK JACKET. "The reportage in "This Is Berlin" offers rich insights into the period before the darkest days descended and World War II began. With chilling immediacy, these broadcasts take the reader to the front, providing flashpoints of the imminent war in the words of America's most trusted correspondent. An introduction by noted historian John Keegan and a preface by Shirer's daughter, Inga Shirer Dean, serve to put Shirer's life and work into context."--Jacket
End of a Berlin diary by William L Shirer( )

11 editions published between 1947 and 2018 in 3 languages and held by 501 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A vivid and unforgettable word picture of the destruction of Nazi Germany" (The New York Times). A radio broadcaster and journalist for Edward R. Murrow at CBS, William Shirer was new to the world of broadcast journalism when he began keeping a diary while on assignment in Europe during the 1930s. It was in 1940, when he was still a virtual unknown, that Shirer wondered whether his eyewitness account of the collapse of the world around Nazi Germany could be of any interest or value as a book. Shirer's Berlin Diary, which is considered the first full record of what was happening in Germany during the rise of the Third Reich, appeared in 1941. The book was an instant success'and would not be the last of his expert observations on Europe. Shirer returned to the European front in 1944 to cover the end of the war. As the smoke cleared, Shirer'who watched the birth of a monster that threatened to engulf the world'now stood witness to the death of the Third Reich. End of a Berlin Diary chronicles this year-long study of Germany after Hitler. Through a combination of Shirer's lucid, honest reporting, along with passages on the Nuremberg trials, copies of captured Nazi documents, and an eyewitness account of Hitler's last days, Shirer provides insight into the unrest, the weariness, and the tentative steps world leaders took towards peace

The rise and fall of the Third Reich : [a history of Nazi Germany] by William L Shirer( Recording )

16 editions published between 1987 and 2010 in English and held by 315 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since its publication in 1960, William L. Shirer's monumental study of Hitler's German empire has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of the twentieth century's blackest hours. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. Shirer's unforgettable account of the pivotal characters and events of that critical era benefits from his many years as a reporter and his own personal recollections, as well as from the mass of historical documents retrieved from the German Foreign Office. The result is a brutally objective account of how Hitler wrested political control of Germany and managed to take the country with him on his mad six-year quest for world domination, only to see it go down in flames in the end
