An historical geography of Europe, 450 B.C.-A.D. 1330 by Norman John Greville Pounds( Book )

144 editions published between 1947 and 2005 in 5 languages and held by 2,516 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The central theme of this book is the changing spatial pattern of human activities during the last 2,500 years of Europe's history. Professor Pounds argues that three factors have determined the locations of human activities: the environment, the attitudes and forms of social organization of the many different peoples of Europe and lastly, the levels of technology. Within the broad framework of the interrelationships of environment, society and technology, several important themes pursued from the fifth century BC to the early twentieth century: settlement and agriculture, the growth of cities, the development of manufacturing and the role of trade. Underlying each of these themes are the discussions of political organization and population. Although the book is based in part of Professor Pound's magisterial three volumes An Historical Geography of Europe (1977, 1980, 1985), it was written especially for students and readers interested in a general survey of the subject

An historical geography of Europe, 1500-1840 by Norman John Greville Pounds( Book )

31 editions published between 1979 and 2009 in English and held by 885 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, like its companion volume, An Historical Geography of Europe 450 BC-AD 1330, seeks to examine the complex of natural and man-made features that have influenced the course of history and have been influenced by it. It follows the general pattern of the earlier volume and spans the period from the early sixteenth century to the eve of the Industrial Revolution in continental Europe, approximately 1500 to 1840. It first presents a picture of the geography of Europe - political, social and economic - in the early sixteenth century, and it ends with a similar picture of continental Europe in the early nineteenth. The intervening period of about three centuries is too short to be presented in a series of cross-sections. Instead, between these two horizontal pictures a series of vertical studies has been inserted. These trace the development of the main facets of European geography during this period. There are chapters on population, urban development, agriculture, manufacturing and trade and transport. As in the earlier volume, no attempt has been made to include either the British Isles or Russia, and these are referred to only incidentally

The culture of the English people : Iron Age to the Industrial Revolution by Norman John Greville Pounds( Book )

15 editions published between 1994 and 2010 in English and held by 543 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This wide-ranging book, first published in 1994, traces the development of popular culture in England from the Iron Age, when it first becomes apparent as a whole, to the eighteenth century. The concept of popular culture is here taken to be the body of ideas which is held by a people about itself and its environment, both physical and social, together with the tools and artefacts through which its members related to one another and to the outside world; it follows therefore that the general theme of the book is peoples' attitude to, and use of, their environment. After a short discussion of the Prehistoric and Roman cultures the book deals in depth with the essential foundations - shelter and housing, warmth and security, furnishings and domestic convenience, food and its preparation, and ultra-familial and ultra-communal relations. A separate chapter is devoted to the culture of towns. The text is illustrated throughout by objects, artefacts and structures, many of which are visual representations of earlier cultures

An atlas of Middle Eastern affairs by Norman John Greville Pounds( )

41 editions published between 1963 and 1968 in English and Undetermined and held by 437 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the Middle East, perhaps more than anywhere else, politics depends on geography. In the past, the Middle East's fluid natural boundaries, stretching from the low-lying desert plain into three continents, permitted unparalleled expansion of its native empires, and its importance as a crossroads between Africa, Europe, and the Far East increased in each century. Today, there are added factors of significance--primarily, a disproportionate and fabulous wealth in oil and the strategic value of Middle Eastern states, located directly below Soviet territory, but connected to the West through their commerce and, to some extent their past politics and present military alliances. Here is an atlas that provides a precise and cogent summary--in 58 maps and accompanying text--of the basic geographic, national, and cultural factors that distinguish this region today. The authors provide maps and commentary first on the Middle East as a whole--its climate, physical geography, agriculture, political divisions, economics, languages, and religions-- and on significant features ranging from the placement of oil pipelines and refineries to the sources and irrigation basin of the Nile River. They also survey the most important political and religious developments of the past: the expansion and decline of the Ottoman Empire; the spread of the religion of Islam; and imperial colonies, concession, and protectorates from Alexander to World War II. The second half of the atlas contains maps and text on the historical background, geography, economics, and current politics of every country of the Middle East." -- Publisher's description
A history of the English parish : the culture of religion from Augustine to Victoria by Norman John Greville Pounds( Book )

20 editions published between 1999 and 2004 in English and held by 430 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Most writings on church history have been concerned mainly with church hierarchy, and with theology, liturgy and canon law. This book looks at the church 'from below', from the lowest stratum of its organisation - the parish - in which the church building is seen as the parishioners' handiwork and as a reflection of local popular culture." "The book discusses in turn the origin and development of the system of precisely defined parishes, their function - in terms of economics and personnel - and the church fabric which embodied the aspirations of parishioners, who saw the church more as an expression of their cultural and social hopes than as the embodiment of their faith. The book ends with the failure of the parish to meet all its obligations - social, governmental and religious - from the late eighteenth century onwards."--Jacket

The medieval city by Norman John Greville Pounds( Book )

7 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 409 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Presents a history of the town in the middle Ages, discussing its early growth and structure, trades, guilds, crime, sanitation, medical care, and the role of government and the church. An introduction to the life of towns and cities in the medieval period, this book shows how medieval towns grew to become important centers of trade and liberty. Beginning with a look at the Roman Empire's urban legacy, the author delves into urban planning or lack thereof; the urban way of life; the church in the city; city government; urban crafts and urban trade, health, wealth, and welfare; and the city in history. Annotated primary documents like Domesday Book, sketches of street life, and descriptions of fairs and markets bring the period to life, and extended biographical sketches of towns, regions, and city dwellers provide readers with valuable detail; in addition, 26 maps and illustrations, an annotated bibliography, glossary, and index round out the work
