Between Pacific tides
by Edward Flanders Ricketts
(
Book
)
7 editions published between 1948 and 1985 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,160 libraries worldwide This book describes the habits and habitats of the animals that live in one of the most prolific life zones of the world--the rocky shores and tide pools of the Pacific Coast of the United States. The intricate and fascinating life processes of these creatures are described with affectionate care. The animals are grouped according to their most characteristic habitat, whether rocky shore, sandy beach, mud flat, or wharf piling, and the authors discuss their life history, physiology, and community relations, and the influence of wave shock and shifting tide level. Though the basic purpose and structure--and much of the text--of the book remain the same, content has been increased by about 20 percent; a multitude of changes and additios has been made in the text; the Annotated Systematic Index and General Bibliography have been updated and greatly expanded (now almost 2,300 entries); more than 200 new photographs and drawings have been incorporated; and an entirely new chapter has been added--a topical presentation of the several factors influencing distribution of organisms along the shore. This edition also includes John Steinbeck's Foreword to the 1948 edition.

Beyond the outer shores : the untold odyssey of Ed Ricketts, the pioneering ecologist who inspired John Steinbeck and Joseph Campbell
by Eric Enno Tamm
(
Book
)
8 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 588 libraries worldwide In the 1930s, Ricketts was a lone, largely marginalized scientist--an outcast to academia with no university degrees, memberships or honors--and his pioneering ideas were at first dismissed by the scientific establishment. Today he's usually remembered as "Doc," the beer-drinking philosopher-scientist in Steinbeck's Cannery Row, but Ricketts was actually a trailblazing ecologist who did seminal work in the emerging field on the Pacific Coast, and whose ideas, viewpoints and warnings remain timely sixty years later.

(
Book
)
6 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 257 libraries worldwide This portrait of one of John Steinbeck's closest friends illuminates the life and work of a figure central to the development of scientific and literary thought in the 20th century. Marine biologist Edward F. Ricketts is perhaps best known as the inspiration for John Steinbeck's most empathic literary characters Doc in Cannery Row, Slim in Of Mice and Men, Jim Casy in The Grapes of Wrath, and Lee in East of Eden. The correspondence of this accomplished scientist, writer, and philosopher reveals the influential exchange of ideas he shared with such prominent thinkers and artists as Henry Miller.
