The trial and death of Socrates : being the Euthyphron, Apology, Crito and Phaedo of Plato by Plato( )

2 editions published between 1910 and 2011 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The trial of Socrates is one of the most famous trials of all time. He was accused of two acts of impiety: "failing to acknowledge the gods that the city acknowledges" and "introducing new deities." Following the customs of Athenian democracy, he was tried by 501 citizens, found guilty, and sentenced to death by drinking a hemlock-laced liquid. The reasons for this conviction are still unclear. Athens had just regained its democracy after a harsh period of rule by a group of dictators, one of whom was a former student of Socrates. Plato also credits Aristophanes' play The Clouds and Socrates' scathing social criticism as influential in turning the crowd against him. This book contains several important dialogues revolving around the trial and its aftermath. In "The Apology," Plato records Socrates' speech in his own defense at the trial. "Crito" occurs after Socrates' sentencing, when a wealthy friend offers to buy Socrates out of prison. This book also includes the dialogues "Euthyphron" and "Phaedo."

Sokrates : sein Bild in Dichtung und Geschichte by Olof Gigon( Book )

1 edition published in 1947 in German and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

100 quotes by Socrates by Socrates( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Socrates is an enigmatic figure, known chiefly through the accounts of others like Plato and Aristophanes. He was one of the most brilliant intellects ever, and devised what would later be called the Socratic method, which is a way of leading one's interlocutor to see his errors and contradictions through clever questioning before leading him to the truth. In ancient Athens, Socrates was widely known as a "gadfly", that is, an annoying insect buzzing at people's ears, because he kept questioning prejudices and contradictions; he was eventually tried and executed for "corrupting the minds of the youth". We have selected for you 100 of his best quotes, so you can decide whether this can be considered corruption, or an incredibly efficient way of learning to think for oneself

Memorabilia by Xenophon( Book )

3 editions published between 1811 and 2002 in 3 languages and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An essential text for understanding Socrates, Xenophon's Memorabilia is the compelling tribute of an affectionate student to his teacher, providing a rare firsthand account of Socrates' life and philosophy. The Memorabilia is invaluable both as a work of philosophy in its own right and as a complement to the study of Plato's dialogues. The longest of Xenophon's four Socratic works, it is particularly revealing about the differences between Socrates and his philosophical predecessors. Far more obviously than Plato in the dialogues, Xenophon calls attention in the Memorabilia to his own relationship with Socrates. A colorful and fully engaged writer, Xenophon aims above all to convince his readers of the greatness of Socrates' thought and the disgracefulness of his conviction on a capital charge. In thirty-nine chapters, Xenophon presents Socrates as an ordinary person and as a great benefactor to those associated with h
