With Sartre, Merleau-Ponty was the foremost French philosopher of the post-war period. What makes this work so important is that it returned the body to the forefront of philosophy for the first time since Plato.

This work is required reading for all serious thinkers in the fields of anthropological psychology, social psychology, psychology, clinical and other psychiatry, and psychoanalysis.... However, after Merleau-Ponty's two studies of Marxist theory and practice (Humanisme et Terreur and Les Aventures de la Dialectique), he alienated both orthodox Marxists and "mandarins of the left" such as Sartre and de Beauvoir. Perhaps his most lasting contribution to the interpretation of human a existence was his formulation of a positive philosophical approach to psychology - the foundations of which were clearly outlined in [this text] and later more fully developed in Phenomenology of Perception. -Back cover.

The lecture notes provide neither a comprehensive grasp of [the author's] thought as a whole nor a sound basis for its critical evaluation and possible refutation. In the very nature of the case these lecture notes are often extremely condensed: a sentence may serve to recall an argument; a few sentences may summarize for those who heard them in a determinate context a position which will appear opaque to us now....The lecture notes taken down by students were periodically gathered together and submitted to Merleau-Ponty for his approval. Then every two or three weeks these notes were published in the Bulletin du Groupe d'etudes de psychologie de l'Universite de Paris. By the end of the year, one would have the full set of lectures as transcribed by students and as reviewed by Merleau-Ponty. -http//:www.bookinprint.com.

"In 1948, Maurice Merleau-Ponty wrote and delivered on French radio a series of seven lectures exploring the world as we perceive it and explaining its importance. Translated here into English for the first time, they offer insight into one of the great philosophical minds of the twentieth century." "The lectures explore themes central not only to Merleau-Ponty's philosophy but phenomenology as a whole. He begins by rejecting the idea - inherited from Descartes and influential within science - that perception is unreliable, prone to distort the world around us. Merleau-Ponty instead argues that the world as we perceive it is the real world." "Merleau-Ponty explores this guiding theme through a series of reflections on science, space, our relationships with others, animal life and art. Throughout, he argues, our understanding is rooted in bodily experience of the perceived world, including experiences of the presence of other people, and equally of other animals." "He provides vivid examples with the help of Kafka, studies of animal behaviour and above all modern art, particularly the work of Cezanne and his famous saying, 'as I paint, I draw'." "An exploration of consciousness and the senses, The World of Perception is essential reading for anyone interested in the work of Merleau-Ponty, twentieth-century philosophy and art."--Jacket.

"Les concepts fondamentaux de la philosophie moderne -par exemple, les distinctions du sujet et de l'objet, de l'essence et du fait, de l'être et du néant, les notions de conscience, d'image, de chose- impliquent déjà une interprétation singulière du monde et ne peuvent prétendre à une dignité spéciale quand notre propos est justement de nous remettre en face de notre expérience, pour chercher en elle la naissance du sens.
