"In this classic satire on human vanity, the corrupt, self-seeking officials of a small town in Tsarist Russia mistake a penniless clerk from Moscow for a government inspector. Through the wild inventiveness of Gogol's comic fantasy the play becomes a celebration of the grotesque and absurd elements in human nature and remains one of the great comedies of all time." "As well as the complete text of the play itself, the volume contains a chronology of the playwright's life and work, an introduction giving the background to the play, a discussion of the various interpretations, and notes on individual words and phrases in the text."--Jacket

Evenings near the village of Dikanka : stories edited by beekeeper Rudi Panko by
Nikolaĭ Vasilʹevich Gogolʹ(
Book
)
21 editions published between 1831 and 1992 in English and held by 604 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is perfect for everyone who wants to get to know the Slavic culture better and to look into the past of it. Village Evenings Near Dikanka takes place during the winter celebrations. The blacksmith, a simple boy, falls in love with the most beautiful girl of the village. At the same time the devil visits this village and offers several people his services if they are willing to give him their souls and the Oksana, the beautiful girl gives the poor blacksmith a hard challenge. He is determined to succeed, but therefore the blacksmith need the help of the devil. Slavic celebrations, the nature of this people, everything is shown very realistically in this book. The dialogues are quick-witted, especially the devil and the book is full of humor. The plot is exciting, although this book is not an easy read. This book is one that can widen horizons and show an old life-stlye; it belongs to the Russian classics. The characters are all round and funny; while reading I always feel like I am inside a fairy tale. - Liz on goodreads.com

Evenings on a farm near Dikanka by
Nikolaĭ Vasilʹevich Gogolʹ(
Book
)
120 editions published between 1900 and 2020 in 9 languages and held by 503 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In the autumn of 1831, some easter from the Poltava province issued a book under the tantalizing title "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". The simple-hearted villager, as if in a frightened way, recommended to the enlightened public four fantastic stories allegedly told at gatherings in his modest hut. "This is real gaiety, sincere, unconstrained, without cheating, without being stiff. In some places, what poetry! What sensitivity!" - so welcomed the new book Pushkin. He knew that, under the mask of an old farmer, a twenty-two-year-old writer is hiding, happily inventing and colorful characters (daring dudes, dazzling marvels, stubborn old men, angry women, mermaids, witches, devils - in a word, all sorts of people and nonhumans), and funny storytellers , and the collector himself invariably "truthful" nonsense - Rudy Pank. Nowadays the name of the writer "Evenings ..." is known to all, in 1831, very few knew him. But among them were two great poets - Zhukovsky ..." --Vasha Kniga
