Drought and water supply; implications of the Massachusetts experience for municipal planning by Clifford S Russell( Book )

10 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 505 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book uses the 1962-66 Massachusetts drought data as a base of information to build a planning model of water resources that is of interest to students and professionals involved with water management. Using a demand-supply ratio to measure the relative inadequacy of a given water system, the authors then project demand into the drought period and relate observed shortages to inadequacy and to the climatological severity of the drought. Information on system capacity, water shortage, and water loss has also been evaluated, and a model has been formulated for municipal system expansion. This planning model allows for optimal balancing of the cost of additional storage against expected losses from future droughts and has enabled the authors to examine the proper timing and size of additions to the storage capacity of municipal water systems. Appendices include: a Preliminary Test of the Demand Projections, Notes on Data Used in the Various Tests, Drought Adjustments by the Metropolitan District Commission, Measurement of Business Losses from Shutdown, Losses from Restrictions on Lawn-sprinkling, Correction for Investment Returns, Production Losses and Net Earning Remittals Under Various Accounting Stances, and Methods of Solution. The human ecology of coastal flood hazard in megalopolis by Ian Burton( Book )

14 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A comprehensive research study on coastal settlement in relation to storm hazard, stimulated by the great Atlantic storm of March 6 and 7, 1962 which affected the Eastern coast of the United States from North Carolina to New Hampshire. The geographers who are the authors of this book utilized a new method of research, an attempt to measure the over-all extent of changes in shoreline use at three points in time by use of an air photo sample survey, which represented a 10 per cent coverage of the study shore of 1302 miles. Individual chapters in this well-illustrated research report cover: A Geographic Approach to Coastal Storm Hazard; The Research Method and Strategy; The Magnitude and Extent of Coast Development; Patterns of Coastal Occupance: A Typology; Human Adjustment to Coastal Flooding; The Choice of Adjustment; and The Human Use of the Shore. In the latter chapter, Federal, State, and Local Government Policy Implications are considered, including a suggested framework for zoning for tidal flood-damage reduction. (Author)
