Cognitive development and the acquisition of language by Timothy E Moore( Book )

5 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 888 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume deals with various aspects of the relationship between linguistic ability and general cognitive development. It presents original, up-to-date research for child psychologists, linguists, psycholinguists, scholars, teachers, and students interested in this field and interprets the findings in the context of contemporary linguistic theory. Language acquisition in children is examined in light of a number of cognitive capacities, including the acquisition of semantic categories, memory processes, and speaking styles. Topics include: "Language Acquisition and Cognitive Development,""Space, Time, Semantics, and the Child,""What's in a Word? On the Child's Acquisition of Semantics in His First Language,""On the Internal Structure of Perceptual and Semantic Categories,""Developmental Changes in Memory and the Acquisition of Language,""Code Switching in Children's Language,""The Genesis of Complex Sentences,""Connecting Children's Language and Linguistic Theory,""Structural Relationships in Children's Utterances: Syntactic or Semantic?""The Development of Phonemic Speech Perception,""On the Status of Vowel Shift in English," and "Some Strategies for the First Two Years." Making sense of test-based accountability in education( Book )

4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 329 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Test-based accountability systems that attach high stakes to standardized test results in the form of rewards and sanctions have raised a number of issues for those responsible for educational assessment and accountability. Do these high-stakes tests measure student achievement accurately? How can policymakers and educators attach the right consequences to the results of these tests? What kinds of educational tradeoffs do these testing policies introduce? This book was written in response to school policymaking's growing emphasis on high-stakes testing. It addresses several key areas, including how the tests are used within these systems, how to evaluate the technical quality and trustworthiness of the tests, how test-based accountability affects the practices of teachers and schools, and what effect political considerations have on the policy debate. The authors also provide some recommendations for developing more-effective test-based accountability systems

Underground engineering for sustainable urban development by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 94 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For thousands of years, the underground has provided humans refuge, useful resources, physical support for surface structures, and a place for spiritual or artistic expression. More recently, many urban services have been placed underground. Over this time, humans have rarely considered how underground space can contribute to or be engineered to maximize its contribution to the sustainability of society. As human activities begin to change the planet and population struggle to maintain satisfactory standards of living, placing new infrastructure and related facilities underground may be the most successful way to encourage or support the redirection of urban development into sustainable patterns. Well maintained, resilient, and adequately performing underground infrastructure, therefore, becomes an essential part of sustainability, but much remains to be learned about improving the sustainability of underground infrastructure itself. At the request of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Research Council (NRC) conducted a study to consider sustainable underground development in the urban environment, to identify research needed to maximize opportunities for using underground space, and to enhance understanding among the public and technical communities of the role of underground engineering in urban sustainability. Underground Engineering for Sustainable Urban Development explains the findings of researchers and practitioners with expertise in geotechnical engineering, underground design and construction, trenchless technologies, risk assessment, visualization techniques for geotechnical applications, sustainable infrastructure development, life cycle assessment, infrastructure policy and planning, and fire prevention, safety and ventilation in the underground. This report is intended to inform a future research track and will be of interest to a broad audience including those in the private and public sectors engaged in urban and facility planning and design, underground construction, and safety and security."--Publisher's description
International assessment of research and development in simulation-based engineering and science by World Technology Evaluation Center( Book )

4 editions published in 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 65 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Simulation-Based Engineering and Science (SBE & S) cuts across disciplines, showing tremendous promise in areas from storm prediction and climate modeling to understanding the brain and the behavior of numerous other complex systems. In this groundbreaking volume, nine distinguished leaders assess the latest research trends, as a result of 52 site visits in Europe and Asia and hundreds of hours of expert interviews, and discuss the implications of their findings for the US government. The authors conclude that while the US remains the quantitative leader in SBE & S research and development, it is very much in danger of losing that edge to Europe and Asia.
