Mike Kelley by
Mike Kelley(

)
11 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 404 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"From the mid-1970s, Mike Kelley assembled an incredibly diverse and often controversial body of work. A multidisciplinary impresario, he created works on paper, paintings, sculpture, video, installation, and performance art that managed to be at once shocking yet humorous, complex yet accessible. This companion volume to a much-anticipated exhibition brings a fresh understanding to the artist's work by seeking to address the more poetic aspects of Kelley's work through Eva Meyer-Hermann's unique curatorial approach. Here she presents individual works in new combinations that cross the boundaries of chronology, bodies of work, and former artistic project groups. Identifying themes such as architecture, language, identity, Informe, power, modernisms, nostalgia, and religion, the book represents ideas that have informed Kelley's work throughout his career. As a result, the overarching lines of his oeuvre become visible and accessible. This book features essays, a fully annotated plate section, and a newly researched and revised biography and bibliography of Kelley's work. The publication promises to be the definitive work on the artist"--

4 editions published in 2004 in English and German and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Rineke Dijkstra took photographs - sometimes over long periods of time - of boys and girls of different nationalities on the beach, the development of an adolescent Bosnian girl refugee at intervals of two years, young mothers shortly after the birth of their children, young Israelis before and after their recruitment into the army, young bullfighters after the fight ... Dijkstra's "classical" portraits register the changes brought about in the faces and bodily attitudes of young people by an important experience or crucial event."--Jacket

Malevich by
Kazimir Severinovich Malevich(

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 347 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Russian-born Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935) was Russia's most influential avant-garde artist, a key figure in a succession of art movements in the early 20th century. In the 1930s his work was banned in the Soviet Union after the Stalinist regime labelled abstract art as bourgeois. He then developed a new kind of figuration, still with the sole aim of communicating his theories about the nature of art. This publication accompanies a unique retrospective of one of the founders of abstract art

Marlene Dumas : the image as burden by
Marlene Dumas(
Book
)
24 editions published in 2014 in 3 languages and held by 327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Marlene Dumas is one of the most prominent and influential painters working today. In an era dominated by the mass media and a proliferation of images, her work is a testament to the meaning and potency of painting. Dumas draws on her expansive visual archive and the nuances of language to create intense, psychologically charged works which explore themes such as sexuality, love, death and guilt, often referencing art history and current affairs. Her paintings and drawings are characterized by their extraordinary expressiveness and sometimes controversial subject matter. This fully illustrated exhibition catalogue accompanies a major exhibition at the Tate Modern, the Stedelijk Museum and the Fondation Beyeler. Surveying the artist's oeuvre from the mid-70s to the present, it features over 100 of her most important paintings and drawings alongside lesser-known works from the early period of her career. The Image as Burden also includes a new interview with the artist; extracts from previously published but lesser-known texts (some available in English for the first time); and a new short story from prize-winning author Colm Tóibín written in response to the paintings. Essays and texts from a wide range of contributors examine the key themes and motifs in her work and reflect on Dumas' entire career

Peter Hujar : a retrospective by
Peter Hujar(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Peter Hujar, a New Yorker of Ukrainian descent, died of AIDS in 1987. He recorded the world in astonishing portraits of cows, sheep, and geese in the country, dogs in the studio, the sea, the city, and above all his fellow human beings, many of whom have since won fame: Susan Sontag, John Waters, Divine, William S. Borroughs, Candy Darling, Robert Wilson, David Wojnarowicz, Paul Thek, and many men, in the nude, half-dressed, sleeping, posing, tumescent. People, animals, landscapes - Peter Hujar approached them all with great respect and a perfect sense of balance between near and far. His subjects face us with supremely dignified singularity, with loneliness at times, and at times in an aura of dauntless and "splendid isolation."

Dennis Hopper (a keen eye) : artist, photographer, filmmaker by
Dennis Hopper(
Book
)
9 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Dennis Hopper (Dodge City, Kansas, 1936) is especially known for his work in films - among them Easy Rider, Out of the Blue and Colors - as both actor and director. This publication focuses on his visual art: paintings, photographs and assemblages produced from 1955 until now. That work has been influenced by Hopper's film work in all sorts of ways. He incorporates photographs and film stills into his paintings, often assembling separate pieces into diptychs and other multiple combinations. Rudi Fuchs and Jan Hein Sassen, director and curator of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, analyze Hopper's art, his involvement in the West-Coast art scene and the complex circumstances under which he has developed his versatile talents. Capturing the atmosphere of Dennis Hopper's artistic, social and personal landscape, the essays also give consideration to his contacts with other artists, such as Edward Kienholz, Richard Diebenkorn, Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha. This book portrays the multifaceted nature of Hopper's artistry and the ambiguity of his image, which ranges from that of the tough, public cult figure to one of an intense and introspective painter."--BOOK JACKET

Kazimir Malevich and the Russian avant-garde : featuring selections from the Khardzhiev and Costakis collections : Stedelijk
Museum Amsterdam, 19 October 2013-2 February 2014 by
Kazimir Severinovich Malevich(
Book
)
10 editions published in 2013 in English and German and held by 221 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In 1915, Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935) radically transformed the course of twentieth-century art with his "Black Square" painting and his manifesto "From Cubism to Suprematism." These works espoused a new art of pure geometricism, intended to be universally comprehensible regardless of cultural origin. Although he is famed for his rigorous pursuit of the "non-objective," Malevich in fact explored many strands of painting, embracing at various stages Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism and Cubism, as well as traditional Russian folk art. Drawing on the collections of Nikolai Khardzhiev and Georges Costakis--the two leading collectors of Russian avant-garde art, whose collections were largely assembled at a time when abstract art was banned in the Soviet Union--this catalogue traces the breadth of Malevich's career through his oil paintings, gouaches, drawings, sculptures and designs for opera and film. All phases of his development are represented here, from his early Impressionist-style work to his iconic Suprematist pieces, as well as his lesser-known figurative paintings and works on paper. These are contextualized alongside work by Malevich's contemporaries, such as Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Natalia Goncharova, Vera Pester, Ivan Puni and Mikhail Meno

Karel Appel : pastorale, chiaroscuro by
Karel Appel(
Book
)
9 editions published in 2001 in 3 languages and held by 218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Karel Appel (Amsterdam, 1921) is, without a doubt, one of the most prominent Dutch visual artists of the twentieth century. His influence on the painting of the latter half of the twentieth century has had great significance, internationally as well. Appel was among the founders of the Dutch Experimentele Groep in 1948; that same year gave rise to Cobra, an international group of like-minded expressionist artists who came predominantly from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. In 1950 Appel moved to Paris, and later he came to live and work in Monaco, Tuscany and New York. In recent years he has been spending longer and more frequent periods in Amsterdam." "Now, at eighty years of age, Karel Appel-a painter with enormous experience, depth and concentration-continues to be extraordinarily active. Pastorale Chiaroscuro presents a selection of his paintings from the last twenty years. Mainly landscapes, figures in landscape, animals and nudes, the subjects lend themselves to his instinct and his style. They are works in which light and color are brought together with exuberance and virtuosity. In a conversation, Rudi Fuchs and Karel Appel touch on the great painterly themes-color, light, the brushstroke and matter-but also Appel's artistic development and his connection with painters such as Van Gogh, Mondrian and Rembrandt. Appel also speaks about his own motives and interests during the interview." "In honor of Karel Appel's eightieth birthday, Johannes Gachnang and Jean Fremon have each contributed an essay: Gachnang delves into a kaleidoscopic exploration of Appel's creativity; Fremon describes, in a letter to Rudi Fuchs, the memories, associations and longings that are evoked by the intensity of Appel's painting." "Pastorale Chiaroscuro provides a handsomely compiled survey of Appel's impressive work from the past two decades and shows an artist who remains vigorous and highly productive. Book jacket."--BOOK JACKET
