The rise and fall of strategic planning : reconceiving roles for planning, plans, planners by Henry Mintzberg( Book )

65 editions published between 1993 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 2,266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mintzberg traces the origins and history of strategic planning through its prominence and subsequent fall. He argues that we must reconceive the process by which strategies are created -- by emphasizing informal learning and personal vision -- and the roles that can be played by planners. Mintzberg proposes new and unusual definitions of planning and strategy, and examines in novel and insightful ways the various models of strategic planning and the evidence of why they failed. Reviewing the so-called "pitfalls" of planning, he shows how the process itself can destroy commitment, narrow a company's vision, discourage change, and breed an atmosphere of politics. In a harsh critique of many sacred cows, he describes three basic fallacies of the process -- that discontinuities can be predicted, that strategists can be detached from the operations of the organization, and that the process of strategy-making itself can be formalized.--Publisher description

Strategy safari : a guided tour through the wilds of strategic management by Henry Mintzberg( Book )

68 editions published between 1998 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 1,630 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Strategy making is considered the high point of managerial activity. But bombarded by fads and fixes, most managers have been groping blindly to get their arms around the proverbial elephant. Now Henry Mintzberg has teamed up with Bruce Ahlstrand and Joseph Lampel to create a powerful antidote: a comprehensive and illuminating - as well as colorful - tour through the fields of strategic management. Mintzberg, Ahlstrand, and Lampel have shaped each of ten different approaches into a coherent school of strategy formation. In the process, the authors clarify the enormous amount of confusion that exists." "The authors provide a thorough critique of the contributions and limitations of each school - from the design, planning, positioning, entrepreneurial, and cognitive schools to the learning, power, cultural, environmental, and configurational schools - culminating in how they might combine to reveal that elephant."--Jacket
Managing by Henry Mintzberg( Book )

50 editions published between 2007 and 2014 in 8 languages and held by 1,530 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mintzberg shows that in the real world managers cannot be the reflective, systematic planners idealized in most management books--realities like the unrelenting pace, the frequent interruptions, and the dizzying variety of activity make that impossible. Recognizing this, he outlines a new model of management: not a list of tasks but a dynamic process in which managers accomplish their purpose working through information, through people, and, more rarely, through direct action. --from publisher description
The structuring of organizations : a synthesis of the research by Henry Mintzberg( Book )

64 editions published between 1975 and 2011 in French and English and held by 1,450 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How do organizations structure themselves? A synthesis of the empirical literature in the field, supported by numerous examples and illustrations, provides images that produce a theory. The author introduces five basic configurations of structure - the simple structure, the machine bureaucracy, the professional bu- reaucracy, the divisionalized form, and the adhocracy. This book reveals that structure seems to be at the root of many questions about organizations and why they function as they do

Structure in fives : designing effective organizations by Henry Mintzberg( Book )

43 editions published between 1983 and 2009 in English and Spanish and held by 980 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Every organized human activity, from the making of pots to the placing of a man on the moon, gives rise to two fundamental and opposing requirements: the division of labor into various tasks to be performed, and the coordination of these tasks to accomplish the activity. The structure of an organization can be defined simply as the sum total of the ways in which its labor is divided into distinct tasks and then its coordination is achieved among these tasks. The elements of structure should be selected to achieve an internal consistency or harmony, as well as basic consistency with the organization's situation. This leads us to the conclusion that both the design parameters and the situational factors should be clustered to create what we call configurations. The central theme of this book is that a limited number of these configurations explain most of the tendencies that drive effective organizations to structure themselves as they do. In other words, the design of an effective organizationel structure - in fact, even the diagnosis of problems in many ineffective ones - seems to involve the consideration of only a few basic configurations

Simply managing : what managers do and can do better by Henry Mintzberg( Book )

16 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 349 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author appreciates that managers are busy people. So he has taken his classic book Managing, done some updating, and distilled its essence into this shortened text. The essence of the book remains the same: what the author has learned from observing twenty-nine managers in settings ranging from a refugee camp to a symphony orchestra. The book considers the intense dynamics of this job as well as its inescapable conundrums, for example: How is anyone supposed to think, let alone think ahead, in this frenetic job? Are leaders really more important than managers? Where has all the judgment gone? Is email destroying management practice? How can managers connect when their job disconnects them from what they are managing? The author has written this book for practicing managers, about their practice of management, and for new managers befuddled by the strange new world of managing. --From back cover

14 editions published in 2015 in English and Chinese and held by 107 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Our world is out of balance, says Henry Mintzberg, and the consequences are proving fateful: the degradation of our environment, the demise of our democracies, and the denigration of ourselves, with greed having been raised to some sort of high calling. But we can set things right. Mintzberg argues that a healthy society is built on three balanced pillars: a public sector of respected governments, a private sector of responsible enterprises, and what he calls a plural sector of robust voluntary associations (nonprofits, NGOs, etc.)"
