A concise history of American painting and sculpture by Matthew Baigell( Book )

22 editions published between 1984 and 2000 in English and held by 1,028 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This clear, thorough, and reliable survey of American painting and sculpture from colonial times to the present day covers the major artists and their works, outlines the social and cultural backgrounds of each period, and includes 409 illustrations integrated with the text. The book begins with a discussion of seventeenth-century art along the eastern seaboard and ends with sections on current realistic process and technological art. The eight chapters are arranged chronologically and each generally follows the same organizational sequence. From time to time the author suggests continuities of themes, ideas, and images; and contrasts or comparisons are made between artists of the same or different centuries to show continuities or discontinuities. Some determining factors in American art are considered, but Baigell views the rich and diverse achievements of American art as the result of the efforts and talents of a pluralistic society rather than as fitting into a particular mold. This edition includes corrections and revisions to the text, an updated bibliography, and thirteen new illustrations."--Back cover

Artist and identity in twentieth-century America by Matthew Baigell( Book )

13 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Artist and Identity in Twentieth-Century America brings together a selection of essays by one of the leading scholars of American art. In this book, Matthew Baigell examines the work of a variety of artists, including Edward Hopper, Thomas Hart Benton, Ben Shahn, and Frank Stella, relating their art works closely to the social and cultural contexts in which they were created. Identifying important and recurring themes in this body of art, such as the persistence of Emersonian values, the search for national and regional identity, aspects of alienation, and the loss of individuality, the author also explores the personal and religious identities of artists as revealed in their works. Collectively, Baigell's essays demonstrate the importance of America as the defining element in American art."--Jacket

Jewish-American artists and the Holocaust by Matthew Baigell( Book )

5 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 521 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jewish themes in American art were not very visible until the last two decades, although many famous twentieth-century artists and critics were and are Jewish. Few artists responded openly to the Holocaust until the 1960s, when it finally began to act as a galvanizing force, allowing Jewish-American artists to express their Jewish identity in their work. Baigell describes how artists initially deflected their responses by using abstract forms or by invoking biblical and traditional figures and then in more recent decades confronted directly Holocaust imagery and memory. He traces the development of artistic work from the late 1930s to the present in a moving study of a long overlooked topic in the history of American art

Soviet dissident artists : interviews after Perestroika( Book )

3 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 432 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

If life was hard for all under the Soviet regime, how much more difficult was it to be a dissident artist? For those who did not belong to the dominant school of Socialist Realism, it could be a life of great risk. Often forced to scavenge for materials to use in paintings and sculptures, these artists led both a sometimes dangerous, illicit underground life, as well as an acceptable public life. In Soviet Dissident Artists, Renee Baigell and Matthew Baigell interview nearly fifty former dissident artists to better understand their struggles under Soviet rule and their desires to maintain their sense of inner freedom

Complex identities : Jewish consciousness and modern art( Book )

6 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 416 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Complex Identities is a joint effort by American and Israeli scholars who ask challenging questions about art as formed by society and ethnicity. Focusing on nineteenth- and twentieth-century European, American, and Israeli artists, the contributors delve into the many ways in which Jewish artists have responded to their Jewishness and to the societies in which they lived, and how these factors have influenced their art, their choice of subject matter, and presentation of their work."

Jewish artists in New York : the Holocaust years by Matthew Baigell( Book )

5 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 356 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Because there were only a few authentic instances of visual documentation of events until the war's later stages, artists both used traditional imagery and invented new kinds of imagery to record their responses to the catastrophe taking place. Unfortunately, New York City's Jewish intelligentsia seemed to offer little support, and art critics such as Clement Greenberg largely avoided the issue. Jewish artists were left to cope with the events of the war in isolation, without a collective visual memory to deal with the traumas presented by news reporters." "Artists featured include Marc Chagall, Jacques Lipchitz, Barnett Newman, Abraham Rattner, Mark Rothko, and Max Weber."--Jacket
