Cosmic canticle by Ernesto Cardenal( Book )

59 editions published between 1986 and 2012 in 6 languages and held by 927 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From his years of contemplation at Thomas Merton's Trappist monastery in Kentucky, to his support for the overthrow of the corrupt Somoza regime in Nicaragua, to his foundation of the liberationist Christian commune Solentiname and the highly successful literacy workshops of the Sandinista years, Cardenal has tied poetry to his life and brought poetry to the lives of many. He is the author of over thirty-five books in Spanish, and his poetry has been translated into numerous languages. Many of his early books, including Zero Hour and Flights of Victory, describe the struggle for liberation with a beautiful lyricism and bold imagery. His epic poem Cosmic Canticle was written over a thirty-year period and was first published in English in 1993. This grand opus does no less than explore Latin American history by relating the evolution of the universe to the development of human understanding. Throughout Cardenal blends the visible and invisible, science and poetry, the individual and society, religion and nature in forty-three autonomous yet integrated stanzas."--Jacket
