Classical electrodynamics by
Julian Schwinger(
)
18 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,316 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This text for the graduate classical electrodynamics course was left unfinished upon Julian Schwinger's death in 1994, but was completed by his coauthors, who have recreated the excitement of Schwinger's novel approach."BOOK JACKET. "Classical Electrodynamics captures Schwinger's inimitable lecturing style, in which everything flows inexorably from what has gone before. Novel elements of the approach include the immediate inference of Maxwell's equations from Coulomb's law and (Galilean) relativity, the use of action and stationary principles, the central role of Green's functions both in statics and dynamics, and, throughout, the integration of mathematics and physics. The book should be of great value to all physicists, from firstyear graduate students to senior researchers, and to all those interested in electrodynamics, field theory, and mathematical physics."BOOK JACKET

Quantum mechanics : symbolism of atomic measurements by
Julian Schwinger(
Book
)
23 editions published between 2001 and 2011 in English and held by 552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Julian Schwinger, who shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for physics with Richard Feynman and SinItiro Tomonaga for his pioneering work on quantum electrodynamics, had a considerable influence on the conceptual development of modern quantum field theory. In addition to being an extremely productive researcher he was also a brilliant teacher, and this book demonstrates his outstanding ability to expose a difficult subject in a clear and concise style. In marked contrast to many textbooks on quantum physics, the whole of quantum kinematics and the underlying quantum action principle, which now bears his name, are derived through a systematic analysis of experimental phenomena, thus avoiding the ad hoc postulates of the axiomatic approach. Many applications, all worked out in detail, follow and culminate in an introduction to quantum electrodynamics. A unique legacy, these lecture notes of Schwingers course held at the University of California at Los Angeles were carefully edited by his former collaborator BertholdGeorg Englert and constitute both a selfcontained textbook on quantum mechanics and an indispensable source of reference on this fundamental subject by one of the foremost thinkers of twentieth century physics

Electromagnetic radiation : variational methods, waveguides and accelerators : including seminal papers of Julian Schwinger by
K. A Milton(
)
29 editions published between 2006 and 2011 in English and held by 527 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This is a graduate level textbook on the theory of electromagnetic radiation and its application to waveguides, transmission lines, accelerator physics and synchrotron radiation. It has grown out of lectures and manuscripts by Julian Schwinger prepared during the war at MIT's Radiation Laboratory, updated with material developed by Schwinger at UCLA in the 1970s and 1980s, and by Milton at the University of Oklahoma since 1994. The book includes a great number of straightforward and challenging exercises and problems. It is addressed to students in physics, electrical engineering, and applied mathematics seeking a thorough introduction to electromagnetism with emphasis on radiation theory and its applications. A hardcover edition containing additionally the reprints of more than 15 papers by Schwinger on these topics is available separately. Book jacket."Jacket

Climbing the mountain : the scientific biography of Julian Schwinger by
K. A Milton(
Book
)
10 editions published between 2000 and 2008 in English and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Julian Schwinger was one of the leading theoretical physicists of the twentieth century. His contributions are as important, and as pervasive, as those of Richard Feynman, with whom (and with Sinitiro Tomonaga) he shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physics. Yet, while Feynman is universally recognized as a cultural icon, Schwinger is little known even to many within the physics community. This biography aims to describe Schwinger's life and research contributions to a wider audience." "This biography describes the many strands of his research life, while tracing the personal life of this private and gentle genius."Jacket

Particles, sources and fields by
Julian Schwinger(
Book
)
24 editions published between 1973 and 2018 in English and Italian and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This classic book (volume two of three volumes) is almost exclusively concerned with quantum electrodynamics. As such, it is retrospective in its subject matter. The topics discussed range from anomalous magnetic moments and vacuum polarization, in a variety of applications, to the energy level displacements in hydrogenic atoms, with occasional excursions into nuclear and highenergy physics. Based as it is upon the conceptually and computationally simple foundations of source theory, little in the way of formal mathematical apparatus is required, and thus most of the book is devoted to the working out of physical problems
