The struggle across the Taiwan strait : the divided China problem by Ramon Hawley Myers( Book )

10 editions published between 2006 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 350 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1949, China divided into two regimes, with People's Republic of China controlling the mainland and Taiwan, or the Republic of China, controlling a group of offshore islands. This book describes how, for more than half a century, these competing regimes have struggled to unify China, until "political earthquake" of Taiwan's 2000 election raised the stakes. The authors detail the two regimes' move toward détente, its eventual collapse in 1990s, and analyze aftermath of Taiwan's 2000 and 2004 elections. They explain how "Taiwan nationalism" promoted by current regime, calling for Taiwan's independence from China, has intensified conflict between the regimes and locked both sides into a new contest that has increased probability of war. Whether negotiations on divided China issue can occur soon, the authors conclude, depends on how ideological and political markets influence Taiwan and mainland China's political life and beliefs. If Taiwan nationalism grows, with a new generation educated to downgrade importance of their Chinese identity, tensions would nurture separatism from China and war would be inevitable. Whatever Taiwan's people decide, the issue will continue to be a problem for leaders of both sides--Publisher's description

Greater China and U.S. foreign policy : the choice between confrontation and mutual respect( Book )

5 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A group of internationally prominent China scholars held a conference at the Hoover Institution in December 1994 to discuss how U.S. policy can best respond to recent changes in China and Taiwan. Despite the diversity of their perspectives, their analyses made clear that a "get-tough" policy would ultimately fail. This volume presents, in ten authoritative chapters, the first comprehensive overview of this complex topic - along with sound reasoning to support its provocative conclusion. The papers included here not only analyze the recent evolution of Chinese foreign policy toward Taiwan, Taiwan's development and policy on unification, security and economic issues, and the problem of human rights but also set forth the main political and diplomatic visions that will affect the future of greater China. As a whole, this book coherently formulates the principles that should guide U.S. policy toward greater China in the next decades
