Nel capitolo di introduzione de Una peccatrice troverete l'inizio di una storia che parte dal suo epilogo. Il personaggio maschile che assume il ruolo di protagonista è Pietro Brusio un ragazzo che studia legge a Catania ma è attratto dalle lettere. Passeggiando in campagna, un giorno, vide di sfuggita Narcisa Valderi già moglie del conte di Prato. Da quel giorno il ragazzo non poté fare a meno di pensare alla donna perché se ne era innamorato. Non è difficile trovare delle somiglianze del protagonista con l'autore siciliano dell'opera Giovanni Verga. Il romanzo venne pubblicato nel 1866 e sin da subito venne accolto positivamente dal pubblico. In particolare, ricevette una recensione positiva su una famosa rivista viennese ancor prima di essere pubblicato. La recensione fu scritta da Ludmilla Assing, scrittrice tedesca che a Firenze riuniva diversi letterati in un salotto molto frequentato. La stesura del romanzo, probabilmente, risaliva ad un anno prima, il 1865, quando lo scrittore nel corso di un viaggio a Firenze, portò il suo manoscritto con se. La stesura di questo romanzo, infatti, risale al periodo fiorentino dell'autore che si recò a Firenze contro voglia e vi rimase da gennaio a maggio del 1865. A quel periodo risale anche al commedia I nuovi tartufi che vide la stampa soltanto nel 1892 probabilmente perché venne inviata sotto anonimato al Concorso Drammatico indetto da una Società che incoraggiava il teatro. Il romanzo non vinse. Firenze era il luogo dove si radunavano intellettuali italiani e stranieri anche perché era la capitale del Regno. Tra questi spiccava Luigi Capuana, critico de La Nazione, Michele Rapisardi e Antonino Gandolfo, entrambi pittori e Mario Rapisardi, poeta. Quei mesi a Firenze furono fondamentali per formare la letteratura successiva propria dell'autore siciliano grazie al contatto con artisti, musicisti e uomini politici.
