Handbook of environmental management and technology by Gwendolyn Burke( Book )

29 editions published between 1993 and 2005 in English and held by 942 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Unlike the majority of handbooks in the field, Handbook of Environmental Management and Technology is comprehensive in scope. Taking a uniquely historical perspective, it touches on virtually all the major pollution problems and their solutions. Divided into six parts, Part I offers an overview of the field as seen from a global perspective, dealing with topics such as the sources of pollution, the international effects of pollution, various regulatory approaches and more. Parts II and III are devoted to air and water pollution, respectively, and provide detailed coverage of basic dispersion and control issues as well as more specific topics such as acid rain, the greenhouse effect, and wastewater treatment. Part IV discusses general solid waste management issues, including municipal, medical and hazardous waste control, and then narrows its focus to examine a number of individual hazardous pollutants, including asbestos, oils and metals, underground storage tanks, and more. In Part V the authors address a host of miscellaneous issues including noise pollution, domestic and architectural considerations, comparative prevention approaches, and energy conservation. Part VI is devoted to daily management issues such as worker training and safety, crisis management, the monitoring of background contaminant levels, risk assessment and communication, and more." "Handbook of Environmental Management and Technology is a timely, comprehensive reference that belongs on the shelves of plant engineers and managers, industrial hygienists, and health and safety officers. It is also an invaluable resource for lawyers, reporters and other news media personnel, and regulatory officials who monitor pollution."--Jacket

Nanotechnology : basic calculations for engineers and scientists by Louis Theodore( Book )

14 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 350 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is not a secret that the teaching of a nanotechnology course will soon be required in most engineering and science curricula. It is algo generally accepted as one of the key state-of-the-art courses in applied science. The need to develop an understand- ing of this general subject matter for the practicing engineer and scientist of the future cannot be questioned. One of the problems with nanotechnology is that its range of subject matter is so broad that nearly every engineering and science discipline falls under the nano umbrella; in effect, it is interdisciplinary. Adding to the confusion is that no clear-cut definition of nanotechnology has emerged since its infancy nearly a half century ago. The reader will soon note that the author has not laid claim to an end-all definition, but rather refers to nanotechnology simply as nanotechnology. This project was a unique undertaking. Rather than prepare a textbook on nano- technology, the author considered writing a problem-oriented book because of the dynamic nature of this emerging field. Ultimately, it was decided to prepare an over- view of this subject through illustrative examples rather than to provide a compre- hensive treatise. One of the key features of this book is that it could serve both academia (students) and industry. Thus, it offers material not only to individuaIs with limited technical background, but also to those with extensive industrial experience. As such, it can be used as a text in either a general engineering or science course and (perhaps primarily) as a training tool for industry. As is usually the case in preparing a manuscript, the question of what to include and what to omit has been particularly difficult. However, the problems and solutions in this work attempt to address principIes and basic calculations common to nanotechnology. This basic calculations workbook is an outgrowth of the 2005 John Wiley & Sons book "Nanotechnology: Environmental Implications and Solutions". The desirability of publishing a workbook that focuses almost exclusively on nanotechnology calculations was obvious following the completion of that book. This book contains nearly 300 problems related to a variety of topics of relevance to the nanotechnology field. These problems are organized into the following four Parts or Categories

Accident and emergency management by Louis Theodore( Book )

15 editions published between 1989 and 1993 in English and French and held by 329 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the accelerated growth of the chemical industry in recent years, there has been an alarming rise in human, material, and property losses because of chemical accidents. Fires, explosions, hazardous and toxic spills, as well as equipment failures and a multitude of other mishaps, have increased the risks to employees, to society in general and to the environment. Aimed particularly at the engineering profession, this book examines the subject area from industrial, regulatory, and educational perspectives. This volume has been designed to benefit engineers, technicians, maintenance personnnel, and all those involved with air quality and environmental management."--Publisher

Readers gain a deep understanding of both the equipment itself and the many factors affecting performance." "Each chapter offers a short introduction to the control device discussed. Next, progressively more difficult problems with accompanying solutions enable readers to build their knowledge as they advance through the chapter. Problems reflect the most recent developments in pollution control and include a variety of performance equations and operation and maintenance calculations. Each problem includes a statement of the problem, the data used to solve the problem, and a detailed solution." "This publication serves both as a textbook for engineering students and as a reference for engineers and technicians who need to ensure that air pollution control equipment operates efficiently and enables their facility to meet all air pollution control standards and regulations."--Jacket
Environmental regulatory calculations handbook by Leo Stander( Book )

12 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in English and held by 99 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Regulatory Calculations Handbook" addresses the environmental concerns of individuals by presenting the basic fundamentals of many environmental regulatory topics. Featuring an overview of the history of environmental problems, the current regulatory framework, and problems/solutions of practical problems in the field, this handbook comprehensively brings the potential calculations and information on regulations into one single source reference. It: provides 500 solved problems, which detail how to calculate the amount of pollutant that a facility is letting go into the environment; includes problems and solutions that can stand alone, offering material that develops the reader's understanding of regulatory matters; and combines information that is otherwise spread out and difficult to consolidate quickly
Chemical reactor analysis and applications for the practicing engineer by Louis Theodore( Book )

18 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 75 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This books format follows an applications-oriented text and serves as a training tool for individuals in education and industry involved directly, or indirectly, with chemical reactors. It addresses both technical and calculational problems in this field. While this text can be complimented with texts on chemical kinetics and/or reactor design, it also stands alone as a self-teaching aid. The first part serves as an introduction to the subject title and contains chapters dealing with history, process variables, basic operations, kinetic principles, and conversion variables. The second part of the book addresses traditional reactor analysis; chapter topics include batch, CSTRs, tubular flow reactors, plus a comparison of these classes of reactors. Part 3 keys on reactor applications that include non-ideal reactors: thermal effects, interpretation of kinetic data, and reactor design. The book concludes with other reactor topics; chapter titles include catalysis, catalytic reactors, other reactions and reactors, and ABET-related topics. An extensive Appendix is also included"--
