Description of stress-strain curves by three parameters by Walter Ramberg( Book )

3 editions published between 1943 and 1947 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A simple formula is suggested for describing the stress-strain curve in terms of three parameters: namely, Young's modulus and two secant yield strengths. Dimensionless charts are derived from this formula for determining the stress-strain curve, the tangent modulus, and the reduced modulus of a material for which these three parameters are given. Comparison with the tensile and compressive data on aluminum alloy, stainless-steel, and carbon-steel sheet in NACA Technical Note No. 840 indicates that the formula is adequate for most of these materials. The formula does not describe the behavior of alclade sheet, which shows a marked change in slope at low stress. It seems probable that more than three parameters will be necessary to represent such stress-strain curves adequately
Square plate with clamped edges under normal pressure producing large deflections by Samuel Levy( Book )

4 editions published in 1942 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A theoretical analysis is given for the stresses and deflections of a square plate with clamped edges under normal pressure producing large deflections. Values of the bending stress and membrane stress at the center of the plate and at the midpoint of the edge are given for center deflections up to 1.9 times the plate thickness. The shape of the deflected surface is given for low pressures and for the highest pressure considered. Convergence of the solution is considered, and it sis estimated that the possible error is less than 2 percent. The results are compared with the only previous approximate analysis known to the author and agree with 5 percent. They are also shown to compare favorably with the known exact solutions for the long rectangular plate and the circular plate
Bending of rectangular plates with large deflections by Samuel Levy( Book )

4 editions published in 1942 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The solution of von Karman's fundamental equations for large deflections of plates is presented for the case of asimply supported rectangular plate under combined edge compression and lateral loading. Numerical solutions are given for square plates and for rectangular plates with a width-span ratio of 3:1. The effective widths according to von Karman, Bengston, Marguerre, and Cox and with experimental results by Ramberg, McPherson, and Levy. The deflections for a square plate under lateral pressure are compared with experimental and theoretical results by Kaiser. It is found that the effective widths agree closely with Marguerre's formula and with the experimentally observed values and that the deflections agree with the experimental results and with Kaiser's work
Shear lag in box beams methods of analysis and experimental investigations by Paul Kuhn( Book )

3 editions published between 1941 and 1942 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Unified theory of plastic buckling of columns and plates by Elbridge Z Stowell( Book )

4 editions published between 1947 and 1948 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On the basis of modern plasticity considerations, a unified theory of plastic buckling applicable to both columns and plates has been developed. For uniform compression, the theory shows shows that long columns which bend without appreciable twisting require the tangent modulus and that long flanges which twist without appreciable bending require the secant modulus. Structures that both bend and twist when they buckle require a modulus which is a combination of the secant modulus and the tangent modulus
Critical-stress of thin-walled cylinders by S. B Batdorf( Book )

4 editions published in 1947 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Empirical design curves are presented for the critical stress of thin-walled cylinders loaded in axial compression. These curves are plotted in terms of the nondimensional parameters of small-deflection theory and are compared with theoretical curves derived from buckling of cylinders with simply supported and clamped edges. An empirical equation is given for the buckling of cylinders having a length-radius ratio greater than about 0.75
Normal-pressure tests of rectangular plates by Walter Ramberg( Book )

3 editions published in 1942 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The observed realtion between center deflection and pressure for the plates with clamped edges was qualitatively in agreement with thoery in that the deflection and then increased more slowly as the membrane stresses became important. Quantitative agreement within plus or minus 10 percent for the linear portion of the deflection-pressure curve was obtained for only about one-fourth of the plate. The deviations for the rest of the plates were ascribed to deviations from the theoretical clamping conditions at the edges
Buckling of thin-walled cylinder under axial compression and internal pressure by Hsu Lo( Book )

2 editions published in 1950 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An investigation was made of a thin-walled cylinder under axial compression and various internal pressures to study the effect of the internal pressure on the compressive buckling stress of the cylinder. A theoretical analysis based on a large-deflection theory was also made. The theoretically predicted increase of compressive buckling stress due to internal pressure agrees fairly well with the experimental results
NACA collections : a directory of significant collections of the documents of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics by Ruth S Smith( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An alphabetical listing is given of 42 centers that hold National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) documents. Information is given on the number of NACA holdings in paper copy, bound volumes, and microfiche. Additional information is given on the bibliographic records and availability
Experimental study of deformation and of effective width in axially loaded sheet-stringer panels by Walter Ramberg( Book )

2 editions published in 1939 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The deformation of two sheet-stringer panels subjected to end compression under carefully controlled end conditions was measured at a number of points and at a number of loads, most of which were above the load at which the sheet had begun to buckle. The two panels were identical except for the sheet, which was 0.070-inch 24ST Alclad for specimen 1 and 0.25-inch 24ST aluminum alloy for specimen 6. A technique was developed for attaching Tuckerman optical strain gages to the sheeet by the method of attachment. This technique was used to explore the strain distribution in the sheet at various loads. The twisting and the bending of the stringers were measured by means of pointers attached to the stringers. The shape of the buckles in the sheet of specimen 6 was recorded at two loads by means of plaster casts
The influence of impact velocity on the tensile characteristics of some aircraft metals and alloys by Donald S Clark( Book )

2 editions published in 1942 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report deals principally with the results of tension tests on sixteen metals and alloys, most of which are employed extensively in aircraft construction. The tension characteristics are discussed for static conditions and rates of deformation up to about 150 feed per second
Principles of moment distribution applied to stability of structures composed of bars or plates by Eugene E Lunquist( Book )

3 editions published between 1944 and 1945 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The principles of the cross method of moment distribution, which have previously been applied to the stability of structures composed of bars under axial load, are applied to the stability of structures composed of long plates under longitudinal load. A brief theoretical treatment of the subject, as applied to structures composed of either bars or plates, is included, together with an illustrative example for each of these two types of structure. An appendix presents the derivation of the formulas for the various stiffnesses and carry-over factors used in solving problems in the stability of structures composed of long plates
Some investigations of the general instability of stiffened metal cylinders. 8 - Stiffened metal cylinders subjected to pure torsion by Louis G Dunn( Book )

3 editions published in 1947 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An experimental investigation of the general instability of reinforced thin-walled metal cylinders was carried out at the California Institute of Technology. The basic parameters involved were the spacing and sectional properties of stiffening elements, the wall thickness, and the diameter of the cylinder. An analysis of the experimental data led to a suitable parameter for estimating the general-instability stress of reinforced metal cylinders when subjected to pure torsion loading
