The small Hebridean island of Alsaig, famous for its export of a fine malt whisky, faces a crisis. It is threatened with a takeover by an American firm which would result in many of the workers being made redundant. The owner is refusing to sell despite pressure from his family. Tension mounts as threats of sabotage are followed by an attempt on the owner's life. Then an actual murder is committed and storms lash the island, isolating it and preventing the police crossing over from the mainland.
