General education today : a critical analysis of controversies, practices, and reforms by Jerry G Gaff( Book )

11 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 635 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The range of controversies and changes emerging from the current revival of general education are examined, and many ideas, examples, and recommendations for achieving realistic and successful curricular reform are offered. Instead of either offering an apology for general education or advocating any particular approach, the book draws on solid experiences of hundreds of institutions to describe and evaluate general education in the context of concrete institutional realities, practical problems, and workable program alternatives. Analysis is based on survey data from 193 colleges, program descriptions gathered from 200 institutions for a national clearinghouse, professional experience of the author as director of the 3-year Project on General Education Models (Project gem), and contemporary thinking. Guidelines are developed that can help academic leaders set up general education programs tailored to the missions and traditions of their own institutions. Strategies for initiating and orchestrating change are highlighted, and promising approaches to teaching, faculty development, funding administration, grading, and program evaluation are revealed. Appended are findings from the Association of American Colleges Survey and a directory of institutions reviewing general education. (Lb)

Changing general education curriculum( Book )

5 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This issue is about changing the general education curriculum--in big ways through significant reforms and, more frequently, incremental ways--to accomplish purposes better, connect with students better, and provide a more engaging and intellectually and emotionally compelling common collegiate experience. The chapter authors present the results of a recent national survey on changes in general education: four case studies of institutions that have undertaken change--how they did it, what the constraints were, and most important, what the results were: and discussions on achieving curricular coherence and the nature of change and how to bring it about -- from publisher

Responding to the challenge to improve general education, this compilation of ideas, programs, and people is intended to provide information, broaden perspectives about what can be done, and help to highlight strengths and weaknesses of several alternative approaches. The topics included in this guide grew out of the practical needs of faculty members and administrators who are providing leadership for the revision of general education at institutions participating in the Project on General Education Models. After an introduction and a Presentation of general resources, the following chapters are presented: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives (Jerry G. Gaff); Objectives for Students (Jerry G. Gaff); Curricular Approaches (Jerry M. Chance); Non-Curricular Dimensions (John P. Nichols); Teaching and Advising (Judith A. Redivine); Initiating and Implementing Change (Clifton F. Conrad); and Evaluation: Assessment, Judgment and Decision (Michael L. Davis). Most chapters include four sections: (l) a short essay that offers perspectives, draws conclusions, presents key issues, identifies major trends and highlights current controversies; (2) an annotated bibliography; (3) additional bibliographic material; and (4) a list of programs, organizations, and individuals who direct them. Building the faculty we need : colleges and universities working together by Jerry G Gaff( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph discusses the Preparing Future Faculty (pff) program, a new vision of doctoral education that seeks to broaden the traditional preparation of students who become faculty members. Chapter 1 reviews the four phases of the program, beginning with phase 1 (1993-96) to phase 4 (1999-2002). The program involves a group of cooperating colleges and universities that prepare faculty not only for research but also for teaching and service to the department and the campus. Chapter 2 details three critical elements of the programs: formation of clusters of new institutional partnerships; new forms of mentoring; and the centrality of faculty, both at the doctoral university and at partner institutions. Chapter 3 describes graduate student experiences with pff programs, and offers results of surveys and reports from alumni on the effectiveness of the programs in the job market. Problems of participation in the programs, chiefly with time required and logistics, are also covered. Chapter 4 discusses future challenges, including sustaining the clusters, promoting inclusiveness, and changing the culture of faculty preparation. Chapter 5 suggests the program as a strategy for organizational change and offers some action recommendations. Appended are lists of participating institutions, as well as related readings and resources. (Contains 40 references.) (Rh)

Reforming general education : a survey by Thomas Klein( Book )

2 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The nature of program changes taking place in undergraduate general education and factors that affect curricular change were addressed in a survey. A sample of 272 colleges and universities that were conducting serious review or revision of their undergraduate general education programs were sent questionnaires, and 139 responses were received. The majority (58 percent) were four-year colleges with predominantly undergraduate emphases, but 14 percent were community colleges, and 28 percent had several graduate programs. Attitudes toward general education at 71 percent of the schools had become more favorable during the last three years. Eighty-two institutions recently adopted a curricular revision or had a specific proposal before the faculty. Five related aspects of changes in the general curriculum discussed are: curricular structure, subject matter content, skills that are the explicit aim of instruction, the qualitative character of the program, and the amount of change represented by new programs. Two important structural features are the number of hours of general education required for graduation and its proportion of the total curriculum and the amount of prescription. Requirements in the humanities, arts, natural sciences, and social sciences were increased by 32 to 52 percent of the institutions. Skills that received explicit attention were writing (99 percent of the programs), mathematics (82 percent), critical thinking (79 percent) and problem solving (72 percent). Qualitative changes were efforts toward integration, global studies, a four-year course of study, and nonlecture pedagogy. It is suggested that overall program changes are just beginning. A questionnaire is appended. (Sw)
