Memory and emotion : the making of lasting memories by James L McGaugh( Book )

17 editions published between 2003 and 2007 in English and held by 1,040 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most of us remember where we were and what we were doing on September 11, 2001. Why do most experiences leave little trace while some--even terrible ordeals that people wish they could forget--leave memories that last a lifetime? That is the mystery at the heart of this book. Drawing on fascinating research and case studies, James McGaugh, a distinguished neuroscientist, reveals that the key to understanding how memories are created may well be understanding how they are lost. He shows that lasting memories are not stored instantly. Why the delay? The author explains how the slow consolidation of memory has important adaptive consequences. It allows physiological processes activated by experiences to regulate the strength of the memory of the experiences. Emotionally arousing experiences induce the release of stress hormones, which act on the brain to influence the consolidation of our memories of recent experience. These findings have important implications for the controversial issues of post traumatic stress disorder and repressed memory syndrome. From the prescientific writings of William James to the animal studies of the memory, research pioneers Pavlov, Thorndike, and Tolman, to the latest research of psychologists and neurologists drawing on PET imaging studies of the brain and laboratory experiments involving a variety of drugs, this succinct book provides a wealth of information.--Publisher description
Memory consolidation by James L McGaugh( Book )

19 editions published between 1972 and 2009 in English and Italian and held by 658 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Presents experiments and research that give provocative insight into the workings of human neurobiology. The authors examine morphological studies of memory, neural connections between memory and arousal, the function of brainstem structures, the effects of epinephrine on memory consolidation, and new models of memory formation involving neuroholography and memory codes. Behavioral Neuroscience: An Introduction provides a basic understanding of what is known about the means by which neurons communicate and about the nervous system which interprets, integrates, and transmits signals into meaningful and appropriate behaviors. The book starts with an overview of the nervous system. The text then describes the general operation and organization of the nervous system; and some of the major types of neurons in the context of their systems. The basic characteristics of neurons and how they communicate; the processes and the basic integrative properties of defined groups of neurons; and complex learning and memory are also considered. The book further tackles the auditory, somesthetic, olfactory, gustatory, visual, and motor systems; the functions of the autonomic nervous system and the neuroendocrine system; and the neural basis of two types of motivated behavior, drinking and feeding. The text also encompasses sleep and activity rhythms; the development of the neural circuitry and its plasticity throughout life; and the development of behavior. Behavioral disorders and the aspects of the human nervous system which make man unique among all living creatures are also looked into. Behavioral psychologists, behavioral neuroscientists, and psychobiologists will find the book invaluable

The Chemistry of mood, motivation, and memory; the proceedings of an interdisciplinary conference on the chemistry of mood, motivation, and memory held at the University of California, San Francisco, in October, 1971 by James L McGaugh( Book )

This volume is based on presentations at an interdisciplinary conference on The Chemistry of Mood, Motivation and Memory which was held at the University of California, San Francisco in October, 1971. The conference was sponsored and supported by the Division of Continuing Education in Health Sciences. We thank Dr. Ruben Dixon and his staff for help in planning the conference and for attending to all of the organizational details. We particularly thank the participants for their contributions to the conference and for their cooperation in preparing the manu scripts based on their conference presentations. All of the details involved in preparing the volume for publi cation were handled by Karen Dodd. We are grateful to her for her tireless, efficient and productive efforts. We hope that this volume will help to stimulate further interest as well as understanding of the biochemical bases of our behavior. James L. McGaugh v CONTRIBUTORS Bernard W. Agranoff, Ph. D. Integrating principles of social psychology by Joseph B Cooper( Book )

13 editions published between 1900 and 2011 in English and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"There are a number of problems in the field of social psychology that deserve re-examination in the light of contemporary facts and theories. The purpose of this book is so to re-examine certain of these problems in terms of what we choose to call Integrating Principles. These principles are imbedded in three perspectives which have shaped our approach to this task. First, we are convinced that the psychological study of social behavior and experience must focus on the nature of the social individual. Second, we hold that the available facts of social behavior and experience provide strong support for a cognitive-theoretical position. Third, we believe that man's social behavior must be viewed as a constant process of adaptation; and, as a consequence, an adequate evaluation of man's place in nature requires a healthy respect for comparative psychological and ethological information. In essence, then, we are hopeful that this book will acquaint students with some of the ways in which social psychologists have approached the problem of understanding the individual's social behavior. We emphasize the word some: we have reviewed the problems we believe to be especially relevant to the field. And with the help of our integrating principles, or concepts, we hope that we have suggested ways of making some psychological sense out of social confusion"--Preface.
