This book explores energy's role in nature - how and where it originates, what it does, and what becomes of it. Drawing on a wide range of scientific disciplines, from physics, chemistry, and biology to all the earth sciences, as well as on her own lifelong experience as a naturalist, the author opens our eyes to the myriad ways energy and its transfer affect the earth and its inhabitants
The world of northern evergreens by E. C Pielou( Book )

17 editions published between 1988 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,748 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The northern coniferous forests are the most extensive in the world, covering large tracts across the boreal regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. This updated edition (1st ed., CH, Dec'88, 26-2133) provides an overview of these forests from the perspective of North America. Pielou (The Energy of Nature, CH, Oct'01, 39-0997; Fresh Water, CH, Mar'99, 36-3926) discusses the types of trees present, the interactions of trees with other organisms, and the fate of forests in a changing environment. The book is aimed at general readers, who might include interested amateurs or students in an introductory forestry course. It introduces tree taxonomy and identification along with commentary on past and present distributions and the basic morphology of trees. Pielou outlines the importance of fungi and insects in interactions and environmental factors, such as storm damage and fire, that can modify the dynamics within forested ecosystems. He presents all information in an ecological context. Informative line drawings, including anatomical details of many organisms, support the text. Because this is an introductory work, suggestions for further reading would have been helpful; however, the book is still useful for newcomers to the subject. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and general readers. D. H. Pfister Harvard University--Choice Reviews
Fresh water by E. C Pielou( Book )

11 editions published between 1998 and 2001 in English and Japanese and held by 1,307 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the precision of the professional scientist and the passion of the dedicated amateur, E.C. Pielou conducts a guided tour of fresh water on its course through the natural world. When rain sinks into the ground, how far and fast does it flow underground, and where does it return to the surface? How quickly does water evaporate from lakes and forests to create clouds? What happens when lakes and streams freeze? Does fresh water become naturally contaminated? Pielou's fascination with fresh water gives us a "natural history" that is as remarkable and surprising as the lives of plants and animals."--Jacket
A naturalist's guide to the Arctic by E. C Pielou( )

7 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 1,144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drawing on her wide experience in the Arctic, distinguished ecologist E. C. Pielou provides field guides to plants, birds, mammals, fish, and some insects; and she explains the many phenomena of sea, sky, and terrain that amaze arctic travelers. Richly illustrated with more than 400 of the author's drawing and maps, it will be a treasure for all who care about this spectacular land. Whether planning an arctic journey, doing one, or enjoying memories of one, this book is indispensible. Designed as a compact source of information for those who must limit their load--hikers, kayakers, canoeists, rafters, photographers, and naturalists of all kinds--this guide will ensure that naturalists in the Arctic miss nothing. -- From back cover

World of Northern Evergreens, Second Edition by E. C Pielou( )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Global warming and human-driven impacts from logging, natural gas drilling, mining of oil sands, and the development of hydropower increasingly threaten North America's northern forests. These forests are far from being a uniform environment; close inspection reveals that the conifers that thrive there-pines, larches, spruces, hemlocks, firs, Douglas-firs, arborvitaes, false-cypresses, junipers, and yews-support a varied and complex ecosystem. In The World of Northern Evergreens, the noted ecologist E. C. Pielou introduces the biology of the northern forests and provides a unique invitation to naturalists, ecologists, foresters, and everyone living in northern North America who wants to learn about this unique and threatened northern world and the species that make it their home.Through identification keys, descriptions, and life histories of the conifer tree species, the author emphasizes how different these plants are both biologically and evolutionarily from the hardwoods we also call "trees." Following this introduction to the essential conifers, the author's perceptive insights expand to include the interactions of conifers with other plants, fungi, mammals, birds, and amphibians. The second edition, enriched by new illustrations by the author of woodland features and creatures, updates the text to include new topics including mycorrhizal fungi, soil, woodlice, bats, and invasive insects such as the hemlock woolly adelgid. Emphasis is given to the very real human-driven impacts that threaten the species that live in and depend on the vital and complex forest ecosystem. Pielou provides us with a rich understanding of the northern forests in this work praised for its nontechnical presentation, scientific objectivity, and original illustrations
