Tragic sense of life by Miguel de Unamuno( Book )

479 editions published between 1912 and 2016 in 11 languages and held by 4,126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To the mentality that assumes, more or less consciously, that we must of necessity find a solution to every problem, belongs the argument based on the disastrous consequences of a thing. Take any book of apologetics-that is to say, of theological advocacy-and you will see how many times you will meet with this phrase-"the disastrous consequences of this doctrine." Now the disastrous consequences of a doctrine prove at most that the doctrine is disastrous, but not that it is false, for there is no proof that the true is necessarily that which suits us best. -from "The Rationalist Dissolution" This is the masterpiece of Miguel de Unamuno, a member of the group of Spanish intellectuals and philosophers known as the "Generation of '98," and a writer whose work dramatically influenced a wide range of 20th-century literature. His down-to-earth demeanor and no-nonsense outlook makes this 1921 book a favorite of intellectuals to this day, a practical, sensible discussion of the war between faith and reason that consumed the twentieth century and continues to rage in the twenty-first century. de Unamuno's philosophy is not the stuff of a rarefied realm but an integral part of fleshly, sensual life, metaphysics that speaks to daily living and the real world
Mist : a tragicomic novel by Miguel de Unamuno( Book )

461 editions published between 1914 and 2016 in 16 languages and held by 2,545 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dispensing with the conventions of action, time and place, and analysis of character, Mist proceeds entirely on the strength of dialog that reveals the struggles of what Unamuno called his 'agonists.' These include Augusto Perez, the pampered son of a recently deceased mother; the deceitful, scheming Eugenia, whom Augusto obsessively loves and idealizes; and Augusto's dog Orfeo, who gives a funeral oration upon his master's death. Augusto is to be married to Eugenia who leaves and causes him to contemplate suicide. Before he does that, however, he consults the book's author Unamuno, who informs him he cannot kill himself because he is a fictional character. Mist even includes a chapter that explains Unamuno's theory of the antinovel. Anticipating later writers such as Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre, Unamuno exploited fiction as a vehicle for the exploration of philosophical themes. First published in 1914, Mist exemplified a new kind of novel with which Unamuno aimed to shatter fiction's conventional illusions of reality. It is an antinovel that treats its fictionality ironically
San Manuel Bueno, mártir by Miguel de Unamuno( Book )

441 editions published between 1930 and 2015 in 10 languages and held by 2,100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The novella tells the story of the local Catholic priest (Don Manuel) in fictional Valverde de Lucerna, Spain as told through the eyes, Angela, one of the townspeople. Throughout the course of the story Manuel is adored by the people of the town. He is constantly in the service of the townspeople. He refrains from condemning anyone and goes out of his way to help those whom the people have marginalized. They consider him their "Saint". Angela, after a brief stint away for education, returns to the town to live with her mother where she continues to be amazed at Manuel's devotion. Her brother, Lazarus, returns from the New World and is likewise amazed, but is not a believer. When their mother dies, her dying wish is that Lazarus will be converted. After this takes place, Angela learns that neither Manuel or Lazarus believe in an afterlife, but devote themselves to serving the townspeople anyway; Manuel suffers greatly from revealing his unbelief to the point of dying. Lazarus takes over Manuel's duties after Manuel's death and Angela learns Manuel is being considered for beatification
