"Forming minorities in five adjacent countries for 74 years, Kurds have been fighting for independence or autonomy, against governments reluctant to accede either. The Kurdish saga is one of periodic insurrections, partial victories, misfortunes, defeats, betrayal, national repression, clashing personalities, changing allegiances and an unusual mixture of heroism and expediency. Kurds used governments, and governments used Kurds. [This book provides insight] into both political and military aspects of the struggle, and of the motives and machinations of major personalities involved"--Publisher's website

Civil War in Bosnia, 1992-94 by Edgar O'Ballance( Book )

17 editions published between 1995 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 426 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The civil war in Bosnia, between Muslims, Serbs and Croats, historical and traditional enemies, fought with ferocity, began in April 1992. After initial successful Serb campaigns, battle positions became entrenched, as warlords, who levied tolls on UN food aid convoys, fought a war of siege, bombardment and starvation, to defend their own locality. Western intervention was disastrous; it was a war which could not be stopped. Western policies changed from supporting Bosnian entity, to division by cantons, and variations of those positions, as negotiations continued fruitlessly and endlessly. Uprooted refugees, ethnic cleansing, atrocities, concentration camps, broken promises and deceit, all became prominent features. Distrustful of Muslims, Western statesmen refused to raise the arms embargo against Bosnia so it could defend itself, or to allow NATO (American) warplanes to bomb Serbs. In March 1994, when rival American and Russian initiatives brought about a ceasefire in Sarajevo, bombed continually for almost two years in full television spotlight, it was hoped it would spread and develop into a peace process. Much of Bosnia lay in media darkness. Bosnia may become some form of UN protectorate, a long-lasting one, as it will take time for roused ethnic emotions to cool down."--Jacket

17 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 387 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With the destruction of Israel as its stated goal, the Islamic fundamentalist movement has embraced terrorism as the means to this end. In his bid to consolidate power in Iran after the Islamic revolution in 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini, facing terrorist opposition, curbed it by extreme measures, gaining a taste for this form of warfare and using it as an arm of Iranian foreign policy to aid like-minded terrorist groups and embarrass Iran's national enemies. Since then, Iran has been at the heart of both the fundamentalist movement and the terrorism which seems inextricably linked to it. "The Iranian Connection" is a worldwide network of embassies and diplomatic mission - staffed with intelligence personnel - which shelters terrorists, stores their weaponry, and monitors potential targets

Civil war in Lebanon, 1975-92 by Edgar O'Ballance( Book )

14 editions published between 1998 and 2007 in English and held by 363 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is an account of the turbulent saga of the only Arab state that has a nominal Christian majority. Packed with rival religious sects, feudal chieftains, war lords, squabbling political leaders, and in-house and foreign militias, Lebanon has suffered not only periods of civil war and internal infighting, but also invasions by Palestinians, Syrians and Israelis. It has survived as a republican entity, although shattered, exhausted and bankrupt. The 16-year long civil war in which Christian militias fought to eject Palestinian armed forces began in 1975. Western intervention was repelled by suicide-bombing attacks, and Lebanese Christians and Muslims sub-divided to fight each other. This book tells the story of a civil war was notable for massacres, treachery, atrocities, kidnapping, assassination, changing alliances of convenience, and invasions
