Childe Hassam : American impressionist by Ulrich W Hiesinger( Book )

17 editions published between 1994 and 1999 in English and held by 942 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Childe Hassam has long been recognized as America's foremost Impressionist painter, yet the sheer size and variety of his output have hindered a full appreciation of his work. The present volume seeks to remedy this by offering, for the first time, a comprehensive survey of the artist's career. That career began in his native Boston, where he worked as an illustrator and a watercolor painter. Hassam absorbed the principles of Impressionism during three crucial years spent in Paris in the mid-1880s. Largely self-taught, he emerged from his stay a brilliant colorist with a style uniquely his own. On his return to the United States, Hassam settled in New York, and the next two decades saw him produce his finest work, as he painted ceaselessly in the cities and the coastal resorts of the east

Childe Hassam : impressionist in the West by Margaret E Bullock( Book )

2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 680 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The renowned American impressionist Childe Hassam built his reputation on light-filled images depicting the streets of New York and New England's coastal resorts. During his sojourns in the West, he painted at least sixty images ranging from portraits and still lifes to landscapes and seascapes in oil, watercolor, and pastel." "Childe Hassam: Impressionist in the West explores this significant, but little known, body of work in the context of the artist's entire oeuvre and larger developments in modern art at the turn of the century. This richly illustrated catalogue investigates how Hassam's images of the West mirror a number of his personal and professional concerns; provides insights into technical aspects of his work, which he tended to adapt to the subject and circumstances at hand; and looks at how the West appealed to the artist's broader interests and concerns, such as his desire to create an art that was purely American in both content and style."--Jacket

Childe Hassam : At Dusk, Boston Common at Twilight by Erica E Hirshler( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 82 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this vivid account of one of Boston's best-loved paintings, leading American art specialist Erica E. Hirshler illuminates the context of Childe Hassam's 1880s city scene. With its rosy rust tones, intimate familial vignette and quiet expanse of snow-laden park, today "At Dusk (Boston Common at Twilight)" seems to encourage reflection and represent a decidedly old-fashioned city. Yet Hirshler reveals the ways in which the painting visually signaled the emerging modern city, from subtleties about women's place in the urban landscape to the uproarious clang of the streetcars that would have been heard on the busiest block in Boston. Enriched with reproductions of related paintings and archival illustrations, this evocative volume explores the countered conventions and bulldozed buildings behind the canvas's creation. Carefully researched and elegantly presented, the latest addition to the MFA Spotlight series will delight Hassam fans and history buffs alike

Childe Hassam, American impressionist by H. Barbara Weinberg( Book )

6 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

""I believe the man who will go down to posterity is the man who paints his own time and the scenes of every-day life around him," declared Childe Hassam in 1892. It was as a pioneer of American Impressionism and perhaps its most prolific and successful practitioner that Hassam (1859-1935) realized this credo. In so doing, he provided an account of our national life during a dynamic period. At the same time he helped to create a wave of enthusiasm for American Impressionism that he rode to fame and fortune." "Today he is best known for his portrayals of Celia Thaxter's old-fashioned garden on Appledore Island, Maine, and his depictions of the flags, banners, and bunting displayed on New York's tall buildings in patriotic response to World War I." "This illustrated publication accompanies a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, the first retrospective presentation of Hassam's work in a museum since 1972. Unique to this volume are an account of Hassam's lifelong campaign to market his art, a study of the frames he selected and designed for his paintings, and an unprecedented lifetime exhibition record. Included in addition are a checklist of works in the exhibition and a chronology of Hassam's life. All works in the exhibition as well as comparative materials are reproduced."--Jacket
