Influences of logging and weather on elk distribution in western Montana by L. Jack Lyon( )

5 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Predicting success of prescribed fires in pinyon-juniper woodland in Nevada by Allen D Bruner( )

6 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Thirty prescribed burns were attempted in pinyon-juniper woodlands from fall 1974 to fall 1976. These attempts were made out of fire season, during varied atmospheric conditions, and in several pinyon-juniper communities. An analysis of the successful burns provided us with a method for predicting burning success from windspeed, air temperature, and vegetation cover. An igniting technique is also discussed."
Biomass of singleleaf pinyon and Utah juniper by Elwood L Miller( )

4 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 381 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Biomass determinations in singleleaf pinyon (Pinus monophylla) - Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) stands in Nevada indicate that stem diameter and average crown diameter are the tree measurements most highly correlated with ovendry weights. The equations and tables developed provide a means for estimating the total aboveground biomass as well as the weights for the various size fractions by species. The tables can also be used to estimate the cordwood and slash resulting from fuelwood harvesting operations."
Cost, performance, and esthetic impacts of an experimental forest road in Montana by Rulon B Gardner( )

3 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"An experimental logging road designed to minimize environmental and esthetic impact was constructed in northwest Montana. The road was single-lane (14-foot finished surface, 3-foot ditch), constructed along the contour. Esthetically, the single-lane experimental road was judged far superior to existing roads on the forest."
Weight and density of crowns of Rocky Mountain conifers by James K Brown( )

5 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Relationships between live and dead crown weight and d. b. h. (ranging from 0 to 40 inches), crown length, tree height, and crown ratio are presented for 11 conifer species in the Rocky Mountains."
Grindstone Flat and Big Flat exclosures : a 41-year record of changes in clearcut aspen communities by W. F Mueggler( )

5 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 368 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The role of deer and cattle in the failure of aspen stands to regenerate on Beaver Mountain in southern Utah was investigated by a series of exclosures constructed in 1934. Three-fourths of each exclosure was clearcut of aspen in 1934. Aspen reproduction, shrubs, and herbaceous understory were measured in 1937, 1942, 1949, and 1975. Implications of wildlife and livestock use on aspen reproduction are discussed."
Wilderness campsite impacts : effect of amount of use by David N Cole( )

2 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 344 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Subalpine lakeshore campsites were studied in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, Oreg. Light-use campsites had experienced almost as much alteration as moderate- and heavy-use sites. Sites set back from lakeshores had changed as much as lakeshore sites. Selected indicators of ecological change were evaluated. Implications of this research to management of wilderness campsites are discussed."
A calibration model for screen-caged Peltier thermocouple psychrometers by Ray W Brown( )

2 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ecological adaptations in Douglas-fir populations by G. E Rehfeldt( )

3 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 329 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Rate of woody residue incorporation into northern Rocky Mountain forest soils by A. E Harvey( )

2 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Predicting duff and woody fuel consumed by prescribed fire in the northern Rocky Mountains by James K Brown( )

3 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 303 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Skyline logging productivity under alternative harvesting prescriptions and levels of utilization in larch-fir stands by Rulon B Gardner( )

2 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Larch-fir stands in northwest Montana were experimentally logged to determine the influence of increasingly intensive levels of utilization upon rates of yarding production, under three different silvicultural prescriptions. Variables influencing rate of production were also identified."
Campsite conditions in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Montana by David N Cole( )

3 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The condition of campsites was examined in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Montana. The amount of change that has occurred on these sites was inferred by comparing campsites with comparable control sites. Trampling disturbance - loss of vegetation, exposure of mineral soil, and compaction of the soil - was generally comparable to that found in other backcountry areas. Campsites were unusually large, however, and tree damage was severe. Such impacts were particularly pronounced on sites used by outfitters and large parties with stock. Actions for reducing damage are suggested."
Modeling moisture content of fine dead wildland fuels : input to the BEHAVE fire prediction system by Richard C Rothermel( )

2 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 297 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Describes a model for predicting moisture content of fine fuels for use with the BEHAVE fire behavior and fuel modeling system. The model is intended to meet the need for more accurate predictions of fine fuel moisture, particularly in northern conifer stands and on days following rain. The model is based on the Canadian Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC), modified to account for solar heating of fuels and to predict diurnal trends in fine fuel moisture. The model may be initiated without extensive data on prior weather. When compared to the FFMC and the fire behavior officers' procedures, the new model gave consistently better predictions over the complete range of fuel conditions."
Sediment particle sizes used by salmon for spawning with methods for evaluation by William S Platts( )

2 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 296 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Computer simulation of white pine blister rust epidemics by G. I McDonald( )

5 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 289 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A simulation of white pine blister rust is described in both word and mathematical models. The objective of this first generation simulation was to organize and analyze the available epidemiological knowledge to produce a foundation for integrated management of this destructive rust of 5-needle pines. Verification procedures and additional research needs are also discussed."
Volume and biomass for curlleaf cercocarpus in Nevada by David C Chojnacky( )

3 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Potential water yield response following clearcut harvesting on north and south slopes in northern Idaho by Richard Cline( )

2 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 281 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The hydrologic response of small clearcuts on north and south slopes in northern Idaho was investigated. On the north slope, substantial gains (27 to 35 cm) in potential water yield per year resulted from (a) removal of transpiring surfaces associated with plant cover, (b) elimination of snow interception by a closed-canopied forest, and (C) delayed reoccupation of the soil mantle by invading herbaceous species. On the south slope, small to moderate gains (4 to 11 em) in yield resulted from clearcutting, at least in 1973, the year studied."
Forest regions of Montana by Stephen F Arno( )

2 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 275 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this paper, Montana is divided into eight geographic subdivisions called "forest regions," based on distributions of tree and undergrowth species and the relationship of these patterns to climate and topography. The regions serve as a geographic reference for describing patterns of forest vegetation across the State. Data on the distributions of plant species and habitat types and forest zonation are presented for each region."
Heat transfer and fire spread by Hal E Anderson( )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 273 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Experimental testing of a mathematical model showed that radiant heat transfer accounted for no more than 40% of total heat flux required to maintain rate of spread. A reasonable prediction of spread was possible by assuming a horizontal convective heat transfer coefficient when certain fuel and flame characteristics were known. Fuel particle size had a linear relation to residence time of the flame while fuel bed porosity influenced burning rate. Burning regimes of liquid pool fires (turbulent, transitional, and laminar) appeared to also apply to moving fires in solid fuels."
