"Thirty prescribed burns were attempted in pinyon-juniper woodlands from fall 1974 to fall 1976. These attempts were made out of fire season, during varied atmospheric conditions, and in several pinyon-juniper communities. An analysis of the successful burns provided us with a method for predicting burning success from windspeed, air temperature, and vegetation cover. An igniting technique is also discussed."

"Biomass determinations in singleleaf pinyon (Pinus monophylla) - Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) stands in Nevada indicate that stem diameter and average crown diameter are the tree measurements most highly correlated with ovendry weights. The equations and tables developed provide a means for estimating the total aboveground biomass as well as the weights for the various size fractions by species. The tables can also be used to estimate the cordwood and slash resulting from fuelwood harvesting operations."

"The condition of campsites was examined in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Montana. The amount of change that has occurred on these sites was inferred by comparing campsites with comparable control sites. Trampling disturbance - loss of vegetation, exposure of mineral soil, and compaction of the soil - was generally comparable to that found in other backcountry areas. Campsites were unusually large, however, and tree damage was severe. Such impacts were particularly pronounced on sites used by outfitters and large parties with stock. Actions for reducing damage are suggested."

The road was single-lane (14-foot finished surface, 3-foot ditch), constructed along the contour. Esthetically, the single-lane experimental road was judged far superior to existing roads on the forest."

"The role of deer and cattle in the failure of aspen stands to regenerate on Beaver Mountain in southern Utah was investigated by a series of exclosures constructed in 1934. Three-fourths of each exclosure was clearcut of aspen in 1934. Aspen reproduction, shrubs, and herbaceous understory were measured in 1937, 1942, 1949, and 1975. Implications of wildlife and livestock use on aspen reproduction are discussed."

"Subalpine lakeshore campsites were studied in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, Oreg. Light-use campsites had experienced almost as much alteration as moderate- and heavy-use sites. Sites set back from lakeshores had changed as much as lakeshore sites. Selected indicators of ecological change were evaluated. "Describes a model for predicting moisture content of fine fuels for use with the BEHAVE fire behavior and fuel modeling system. The model is intended to meet the need for more accurate predictions of fine fuel moisture, particularly in northern conifer stands and on days following rain. The model is based on the Canadian Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC), modified to account for solar heating of fuels and to predict diurnal trends in fine fuel moisture. The model may be initiated without extensive data on prior weather. When compared to the FFMC and the fire behavior officers' procedures, the new model gave consistently better predictions over the complete range of fuel conditions."

"The hydrologic response of small clearcuts on north and south slopes in northern Idaho was investigated. On the north slope, substantial gains (27 to 35 cm) in potential water yield per year resulted from (a) removal of transpiring surfaces associated with plant cover, (b) elimination of snow interception by a closed-canopied forest, and (C) delayed reoccupation of the soil mantle by invading herbaceous species. On the south slope, small to moderate gains (4 to 11 em) in yield resulted from clearcutting, at least in 1973, the year studied."
