The movies as medium by Lewis Jacobs( Book )

26 editions published between 1970 and 1977 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,088 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of essays by filmmakers, theorists, and scholars studies the fundamental resources and processes of film expression. Essays on the image deal with elements that make an image meaningful, as well as with the subjectivity of the motion picture camera. Other key resources of film that are discussed here include the movement of the camera, manipulation of time and space, and the use of color and sound. The emphasis throughout is less on the practical techniques of filmmaking than on an appreciation of the parts which make up a film. The intention is to provide ideas about film technique and form which can furnish a framework for evaluating film and to stimulate thoughts and observations about film as art. Among the contributors are Jonas Mekas, Sergei Eisenstein, Gregg Toland, and Kurt Weill. (Jk)

The book is divided into five sections; each section focuses on a decade of filmmaking since 1922 and the first documentary--Robert Flaherty's "Nanook of the North." The section on films made from 1960-70 includes articles on Warrendale, Woodstock, Dead Birds and the Titicut Follies, as well as articles about documentaries in general by Lewis Jacobs, Arthur Schlesinger and Richard Leacock. American experimental film has existed since the technological inception of cinema, through its adolescent rambles of 1900-1919, rising phoenix-like during the high silent era, and finally matured and spread throughout the '30's and onward. The background against which the experimentalists toiled provides a fascinating review of Americana coupled with numerous cross-currents, successes and failures, and an unfailing desire to create on film an image that can be viewed as an independent and provocative art. These home-made films incorporate avant-garde strategies and techniques to achieve a true sense of cinematic intimacy
