The underdogs, a novel of the Mexican Revolution by Mariano Azuela( Book )

336 editions published between 1900 and 2017 in 6 languages and held by 3,779 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hailed as the greatest novel of the Mexican Revolution, The Underdogs recounts the story of an illiterate but charismatic Indian peasant farmerrsquo;s part in the rebellion against Porfirio Diacute;az, and his subsequent loss of belief in the cause when the revolutionary alliance becomes factionalized. Azuelarsquo;s masterpiece is a timeless, authentic portrayal of peasant life, revolutionary zeal, and political disillusionment. First published in 1915, this book is Azuela's classic account of the Mexican Revolution. Demetrio Macias, a naive, peace-loving Indian, becomes swept up in a revolution against the dictator Portfirio Diaz, and his courage eventually leads to a generalship in Pancho Villa's guerilla army. This is a timeless, authentic portrayal of peasant life and revolutionary zeal

Two novels of Mexico by Mariano Azuela( Book )

17 editions published between 1956 and 1972 in English and held by 954 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1910, in a still relatively tranquil world, the Mexican revolution exploded--the sinister quiet of the Diaz dictatorship was broken by Villa and Zapata and their avenging mobs of peons and vaqueros. Mariano Azuela, most famous Mexican author of his day, was a doctor in Villa's army. Taking refuge in El Paso after Villa's defeat, he wrote a series of poignant sketches, together with the full-length novel, The Underdogs, which is considered a masterpiece of Hispanic American literature. The Flies and The Bosses, two remarkable vignettes of the revolution (here translated into English for the first time) were written in hot anger, direct from life; they show Azuela as a skeptic and realist who was nevertheless full of charity for his troubled people.--Cover
