Worship, old and new by Robert E Webber( Book )

12 editions published between 1982 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 537 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A worship that will have staying power is a worship that is firmly grounded in the old, yet aware of and concerned for new ways to respond to the old, old story." In the first edition of Worship Old and New, Robert E. Webber introduced an approach to worship that blended historical and traditional practices with contemporary elements. Since then, the spreading fires of worship renewal have provided opportunity for fresh consideration. This significantly revised edition is the result of Webber's interaction with current worship trends. It is intended to be used both in the classroom and by those who want to improve worship in the local church. Reformatted for an easier, logical approach to worship theology, this revised edition of Worship Old and New is divided into four major sections, addressing the biblical foundation of worship, its theology, its history, and its practice. New information has been incorporated into each section to give the reader a better grasp of the biblical themes of worship, a deeper understanding of Old Testament customs, and a solid grounding in modern-day renewal movements. Especially significant is a reexamination of the actual practice of worship that goes beyond the merely academic to provide a practical perspective through the eyes of the worship leader and worshipers. Well-versed in the best of both past and present, Worship Old and New is a scholarly, up-to-date, and thought-provoking resource for those serious about exploring worship
Ancient-future faith : rethinking evangelicalism for a postmodern world by Robert E Webber( Book )

6 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 427 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a world marked by relativism, individualism, pluralism, and the transition from a modern to a postmodern worldview, evangelical Christians must find ways to re-present the historic faith. In his provocative new work, Ancient-Future Faith, Robert E. Webber contends that present-day evangelicalism is a product of modernity. Allegiance to modernity, he argues, must be relinquished to free evangelicals to become more consistently historic. Empowerment to function in our changing culture will be found by adapting the classical tradition to our postmodern time. Webber demonstrates the implications in the key areas of church, worship, spirituality, evangelism, nurture, and mission. Webber writes, The fundamental concern of Ancient-Future Faith is to find points of contact between classical Christianity and postmodern thought. Classical Christianity was shaped in a pagan and relativistic society much like our own. Classical Christianity was not an accommodation to paganism but an alternative practice of life. Christians in a postmodern world will succeed, not by watering down the faith, but by being a counter cultural community that invites people to be shaped by the story of Israel and Jesus. A substantial appendix explores the development of authority in the early church, an important issue for evangelicals in a society that shares many features with the Roman world of early Christians. Students, professors, pastors, and laypeople concerned with the churchs effective response to a postmodern world will benefit from this paradigmatic volume. Informative tables and extensive bibliographies enhance the books educational value. - Amazon

The secular saint : a case for evangelical social responsibility by Robert E Webber( Book )

5 editions published between 1979 and 2004 in English and held by 265 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The biblical material in The Secular Saint presents the social, moral, and cultural concerns of the Judeo-Christian heritage. The historical material then shows how the church in history has either separated from its culture, identified with it, or attempted to transform it. On the basis of these historical models, Webber argues that there is more than one way for the Christian to live in a responsible relationship with the world. --From publisher's description

"In May of 1977 a group of evangelical leaders and scholars from a wide range of backgrounds gathered together in a meeting that became known as the Chicago Call. The Call provided a unified voice with which its participants argued eloquently for a return of modern evangelicalism to historic Christianity. This book, an outgrowth of the Chicago Call conference, provides insight into the concerns many evangelicals share over the direction in which the church is moving. Some of those concerns are addressed with insight and precision . . ." -- Book cover

Ancient-future evangelism : making your church a faith-forming community by Robert E Webber( Book )

4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Ancient-Future Evangelism, Robert Webber surveys evangelism throughout the centuries, tracing the development of the ancient process of Christian formation. He translates that process for the twenty-first century, presenting four stages--conversion, discipleship, spiritual formation, and Christian vocation--that can easily be adapted to various church traditions. He also suggests three practical rites of passage to accompany this "ancient-future" practice of making disciples. Webber then underscores how the four-fold process of faith formation is interwoven with three theological themes: Christ as victor over evil, the church as witness to God's salvation, and worship as a witness to God's mission accomplished in Jesus. --From publisher's description
