The Study of Judaism : bibliographical essays by Richard Bavier( Book )

8 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 831 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Judaism is among the least known of the religious traditions of the West, and is also among the most difficult to seek out and study. The bibliographical essays before us do much to improve matters. They are not simply lists of books, but thoughtful essays on important problems in the study of Judaism. They address serious students in the field of religion who are not experts in the study of Judaism. They recount what comes first and what comes afterward, what may be important in one way, what in another. Their collective testimony is not that the study of Judaism is too complex for the nonspecialist, but that it is a very serious and engaging undertaking

Minorities in textbooks : a study of their treatment in social studies texts by Michael B Kane( Book )

2 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 730 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study of 45 social studies texts widely used in American junior and senior high schools examines the current treatment of Negroes, Jews, and other minorities. It is stated that, despite past criticism of publishers and authors, "a significant number of texts published today continue to present a principally white, Protestant, Anglo-Saxon view of America, with the nature and problems of minority groups largely neglected." The text is divided into detailed discussion of the textbook treatment of the Jews, treatment of minorities under Nazism, and treatment of black Americans and other minorities in America. It is suggested that a remedy to this situation might begin with efforts to influence school systems to act as agents of change in conjunction with civil rights organizations. (Author/JW)
To change a child: a report on the Institute for Developmental Studies by Fred Powledge( Book )

3 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 608 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book reports an experimental, preschool educational intervention program undertaken by the Institute for Developmental Studies, affiliated with the New York University School of Education, which has innovatively studied early childhood education. Discussed are the effects of being disadvantaged upon a child's education, an evaluation of the traditional approaches to educational methods and goals, the theory and practice of intervention, the problems of training teachers for special educational techniques, and a preliminary evaluation of the intervention programs. The activities of a single prekindergarten class of 17 Negro children over 4 years of age, and two teachers during one day in the winter of 1966-1967, are detailed. (Em)

Face to face : a primer in dialogue( Book )

2 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 355 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first full-length study of the Protestant middle-class Patriots of Dublin, who, in the eighteenth-century, made up the largest concentration of Protestants in Ireland (c.70,000). Freemen of the guilds alone--who were entitled to a parliamentary vote--were almost as numerous as the entire landed class. Hill charts the slow and difficult progress of these merchants, master craftsmen, and shopkeepers, from Patriotism in the eighteenth century to a Unionist position in the nineteenth, throwing light on all subsequent Irish history, and filling an important gap in the historiography of Unionism
