Normality; theoretical and clinical concepts of mental health by Daniel Offer( Book )

20 editions published between 1966 and 1974 in English and held by 964 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Immediately after the publication of its first edition, Normality was hailed as a remarkable breakthrough in helping to identify the behavioral and social characteristics of mental health. But precisely what constitutes "normal" behavior is a continuing dialogue in mental health today, and the steady increase of empirical studies of mentally healthy populations has prompted the authors to undertake this revised edition in which they have paid particular attention to research on normality and the implications that this research has, and will have, for a deeper theoretical understanding of normal personality development and the psychodynmic understanding of the coping process. After classifying theoretical and clinical concepts as presently used in psychiatry, psychoanalysis, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and biology, the authors synthesize four major perspectives of normality; critically review contemporary research in the evaluation of criteria of normality; and offer guidelines for future research. They presdict that the next decade will see more theory building based on the empiricism of the late 60s and early 70s
The Teenage world : adolescents' self-image in ten countries by Daniel Offer( Book )

13 editions published between 1988 and 2013 in English and held by 785 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In order to test the view that adolescence is characterised by emotional turbulence, including impulsive behaviour, mood swings and introspection, nearly 6000 middle class, urban adolescents in nine countries were given the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire (OSIQ). The countries involved were: Australia, Bangladesh, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Taiwan, Turkey and West Germany. The self image of the teenagers was measured in five areas: the psychological, such as emotions and feelings about self; the social; the sexual; the familial; and the coping self. In presenting results of the study, the book focusses on universal characteristics as well as on gender, age and national differences. It also examines the prevalence rate of depression in the ten countries, as well as the relationship of self image patterns to economic and demographic factors. A review is included of the literature on theories of the self in adolescence, cross-cultural studies of adolescents, and research issues in comparative studies

Dialysis without fear : a guide to living well on dialysis for patients and their families by Daniel Offer( Book )

8 editions published in 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 315 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dialysis without Fear approaches the problem of kidney failure from multiple perspectives-that of patients, family members, and to a lesser extent the health care team. While describing in detail the nearly meteoric impact of kidney failure and ongoing need for dialysis to stay alive, the authors highlight healthy coping mechanisms for dialysis patients and their families. While imparting a wealth of factual information, invaluable to patients new to dialysis, it celebrates the life-saving value of renal replacement therapies. Anyone involved in the field of dialysis in any capacity stands to gain knowledge, compassion and a deeper understanding of what patients and their loved ones are going through

The Leader : psychohistorical essays by Charles B Strozier( Book )

10 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 311 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

PETER GAY The syllabus of errors rehearsing the offenses of psychohistory looks devastating and seems irrefutable: crimes against the English language, crimes against sdentific procedures, crimes against common sense itself. These objects are real enough, but their contours-and their gravity mysteriously change with the perspective of the critic. From the outside, psychohistorians are to academic history what psychoanalysts are to academic psychology: a monolithic band of fanatics, making the same errors, committing the same offenses, aH in the same way. But seen close up, psychohistorians (just like psychoanalysts) turn out to be a highly differentiated, even a cheerfuHy contentious, lot. Disciples of Hartmann jostle discoverers of Kohut, imperialists claiming the whole domain of the past debate with modest isolationists, orthodox Freudians who insist that psychoanalysis engrosses the arsenal of psychohistorical method find themselves beleaguered by sociological revisionists. The charges that confound some psychohistorians glance off the armor of others. Yet there are three potent objections, aimed at the heart of psy chohistory, however it is conceived, that the psychohistorian ignores at his periI. It would be a convenient, but it is a whoHy unacceptable, defense to dismiss them as forms of resistance. The days are gone when the advocates of psychoanalysis could checkmate reasoned critidsms by psychoanalyzing the critic. To summarize these objections, psychohistory is Utopian, vulgar, ix x FOREWORD and trivial
Regular guys : 34 years beyond adolescence by Daniel Offer( Book )

10 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 306 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Regular Guys follows 67 well-adjusted, mostly white males, who were initially chosen during the 1960s, to test theories of normal adolescent functioning. They were reinterviewed at age 48 to examine male functioning at middle age. This unique, 34-year study contrasts the critical period of adolescent development, which has been culturally characterized by stress and turmoil, with the relative stability of middle age." "The authors' findings are likely to be of considerable interest and use to clinicians and academics alike. This volume is for anyone who works with adolescents or adults as well as those who study adolescent or life course development."--Jacket
