5 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 554 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"David Smith, the innovative and masterly twentieth-century sculptor, strove to create works of art that could be viewed "without reverence or awe" because they were, in his words, "natural ... statements of peaceful pursuit." Intrinsic to this hope was a conviction that his monumental sculpture belonged in the elements, with sky and earth as its visible reference points." "The Fields of David Smith is published to coincide with a three-year exhibition in the expansive landscape of the Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, New York. The aim of both book and exhibition has been to recapture the experience of viewing Smith's work during his lifetime, when it was deployed with care and exuberance in ever-changing arrangements in his fields at Bolton Landing in the Adirondacks."--Jacket

First person plural : a community development approach to social change by David Smith( Book )

5 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"David Smith has been at the centre of the movement for social change for 50 years. His long-standing work with countless communities has counteracted the competition, manipulation, misinformation, and the exploitation of enthusiasm that lie behind the "facade" of democratic procedures." "In First Person Plural, he outlines his practical guide to popular democratic education. Here is essential reading for practitioners, policy makers, and activists working for social change in the fields of adult and popular education, community development, rural and urban planning, social services, health care, the environment, women's issues, international development, and peace."--Jacket
David Smith : two into three dimensions by Karen Wilkin( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 133 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents a specific portion of the works of American artist David Smith (1906-1965). Smith is universally recognized as one of America's greatest sculptors, and although his three dimensional work has been the subject of many books, this study investigates his lesser known work in bronze and clay relief, drawings and paintings. In between sculpture-making, Smith drew, painted, and made reliefs and bronze medallions. Selection of this smaller more-or-less flat work is what is presented in this work. The different types of work here are organized into in periodic batches -- reliefs in the early 30s and late 50s, clay work in the mid-50s, bronze medallions in 1938 and 1945, oil paintings and Abstract Expressionist drawings from 1956 to 1958, spray/template paintings in 1962. The author believes that this reinforces the impression that Smith would get onto an art form of some kind and work at it compulsively until he and the form itself were both exhausted

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph brings together works by the two artists, not only shedding light on the richness of their individual practices, but also offering an opportunity to clearly see some shared interests and how much these artists actually had to say to each other. Contributions by Sarah Hamill and Elizabeth Hutton Turner inform about these artists' paths and their encounters and collaboration with photographer Ugo Mulas. Hamill looks closely at the many photographs Mulas took of Calder' and Smith's sculpture at the 1962 Festival of the Two Worlds, in Spoleto. Turner explores how and why Calder and Smith found common ground in their shared identification with the American culture of invention. Exhibition: Hauser & Wirth, Zurich, Switzerland (12.06.-16.09.2017)
