Discipline with dignity for challenging youth by Allen N Mendler( Book )

8 editions published between 1999 and 2012 in English and held by 201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Challenging students can be hard to influence and harder to change. Rules mean little to them, rewards and punishments may have only temporary results, and even consequences that can teach better behavior are often ineffective. This book offers a number of new concepts and strategies that have evolved from the authors' efforts to find better ways to help educators assist their most challenging students. These strategies are based upon five principles: (1) Educators are responsible for teaching all students; (2) educators should view difficult behavior as opportunities to educate for change, reserving leverage for excessively disruptive or dangerous situations; (3) the more students are motivated, the less they need disciplining; (4) discipline is just another form of instruction; and (5) educators should have numerous strategies and lots of heart for success. Strategies and concepts include the difference between effort and achievement, three types of interventions, threat versus challenge, seven goals for successful discipline, strategies for fighting faculty resistance, strategies for fighting student resistance, and strategies for fighting resistance within ourselves. Each strategy is thoroughly explained in context to help educators gain practical understanding. An appendix contains a case study of a school discipline plan. (Contains 63 references.) (Rt)

Educators at all levels can learn - The difference between formal and informal discipline systems and when to use each. - The role of values, rules, and consequences. - How to address the underlying causes of discipline problems that occur both in and out of school. - What teachers can do to defuse or prevent classroom disruptions and disrespectful behavior without removing students from the classroom. - Why traditional approaches such as threats, punishments, and rewards are ineffective—and what to do instead. - How to use relevance, teacher enthusiasm, choice, and other elements of curriculum and instruction to motivate students. - How to reduce both teacher and student stress that can trigger power struggles. With dozens of specific examples of student-teacher interactions, Discipline with Dignity illustrates what you can do—and not do—to make the classroom a place where students learn and teachers maintain control in a nonconfrontational way. The goal is success for all, in schools that thrive
