The diaries and journals (1825-1872) describe Heintzelman's participation in the 2nd Seminole War and the Creek War, his activities during the Mexican War, his service as corps commander under Gen. George B. McClellan in Virginia during the Civil War, and wartime life in northern Virginia and Washington, D.C.
