Beyond the quartic equation by R. Bruce King( Book )

35 editions published between 1996 and 2009 in English and held by 410 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objective of this book is to present for the first time the complete algorithm for roots of the general quintic equation with enough background information to make the key ideas accessible to non-specialists and even to mathematically oriented readers who are not professional mathematicians. The book includes an initial introductory chapter on group theory and symmetry, Galois theory and Tschirnhausen transformations, and some elementary properties of elliptic function in order to make some of the key ideas more accessible to less sophisticated readers. The book also includes a discussion of the much simpler algorithms for roots of the general quadratic, cubic, and quartic equations before discussing the algorithm for the roots of the general quintic equation. A brief discussion of algorithms for roots of general equations of degrees higher than five is also included. "If you want something truly unusual, try [this book] by R. Bruce King, which revives some fascinating, long-lost ideas relating elliptic functions to polynomial equations."--New Scientist

Encyclopedia of inorganic chemistry( Book )

11 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 231 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first edition of the Encyclopedia of Inorganic Chemistry treated the elements of the periodic system in alphabetical order, with multiple entries for key elements. The articles from the First Edition were written more than 10 years ago and all areas of inorganic chemistry have seen such a vigorous development that it was necessary to update most articles and to add a considerable number of new articles. The result of this major work is the proud Encylopedia of Inorganic Chemistry Second Edition (EIC-2). (Midwest)
The periodic table : into the 21st century( Book )

7 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book starts by tracing the early history and development of the Periodic Table. The subsequent development of the Table is then presented in chapters that discuss the structure and characteristics of the Table, probe its group-theoretical and quantum-theoretical basis, examine its foundations, and explore its many uses and applications. Each of these chapters is written in a style that is not only readable but also comprehensible to a very wide audience."--Jacket

12 editions published in 1983 in English and Italian and held by 189 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Computational inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry by Edward I Solomon( Book )

12 editions published between 2009 and 2013 in English and held by 157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Over the past several decades there have been major advances in our ability to evaluate computationally the electronic structure of inorganic molecules, particularly transition metal systems. This advancement is due to the Moore's Law increase in computing power as well as the impact of density functional theory (DFT) and its implementation in commercial and freeware programs for quantum chemical calculations. Improved pure and hybrid density functionals are allowing DFT calculations with accuracy comparable to high-level Hartree-Fock treatments, and the results of these calculations can now be evaluated based on experiment. When calculations are correlated to and supported by experimental data they can provide fundamental insight into electronic structure and its contributions to physical properties and chemical reactivity. This interplay continues to expand and contributes to both improved value of experimental results and improved accuracy of computational predictions.-
Organometallic syntheses( Book )

5 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over 160 detailed and tested procedures for the preparation of specific organometallic compounds are given in Volume 4. Part I contains procedures for the synthesis of 76 types of transition metal organometallic compounds, and Part II procedures for the synthesis of 85 nontransition metal organometallic compounds. In both parts, the editors have sought to include procedures that give the safe, reliable synthesis of organometallic compounds that can lay some claim to significance in current chemical research. This significance may be based on various factors such as: (a) the synthesis describes the formation of an unusual or less common structural type; (b) the compound prepared is a useful intermediate in other syntheses; (c) the compound is a model reagent for investigating the mechanisms of various fundamental or industrial processes, such as the Fischer-Tropsch reaction; (d) the compound is a useful reagent in organic synthesis; and (e) the techniques employed in the synthesis of the compound are unusual and worthy of further application, such as metal-atom and electrochemical procedures. Each specific or generalized procedure is organized into the following sections: an Introduction which discusses the available procedures and the reasons guiding the choice of the one selected; a Procedure section which strives to describe the modus operandi, the safety concerns and pitfalls in the preparation; a Properties section that offers further physical and chemical data on the product and, where appropriate, indications of how the compounds can be employed in research; and a Reference section which gives both leading literature citations and supplemental comments on the procedure. Research laboratories in organometallic chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and molecular catalysis have in this book a rich source of information on the preparation of organometallic compounds
