This report of the authors' study and reflections about voluntarism and the present and future of volunteer activity is intended to be useful as a resource, stimulus, and guide for those using volunteers; for organizers of "cause movements"; for professors of graduate students in service professions; and for anyone interested in voluntarism. Chapter 1 begins with some assumptions about the relationship between democracy, voluntarism, and personal development. Ten social trends thought to have relevance for the development of voluntarism are summarized in the second chapter; Chapter 3 analyzes the variety of needs and opportunities for volunteers, and reviews some new patterns and trends in the use of volunteers. Chapter 4 explores the bases of motivation of those who volunteer, and challenges professionals to extend their use of and trust in volunteers. Chapter 5 summarizes and analyzes the problems and practices of recruitment and orientation of volunteers. Goals, methods, and designs for training volunteers are explored in Chapter 6, and the need for training of trainers is discussed in Chapter 7. a "case study of the future" is described in Chapter 8. In a concluding epilogue, the authors attempt to help the reader make a bridge between this volume and his own situation. The humanistic ideas, models, and tools of educator Robert Fox are presented in eight chapters. Chapter I summarizes Fox's ideas toward clarifying values, projecting possible goals and plans toward humane education, the balance and linkage between intellectual, socio-emotional, and citizenship development, the individualization of curriculum, and assumptions about the humane school. Chapter ii discusses Fox's concept of the humane classroom in terms of interpersonal relations, group processes, individualized instruction, and the teacher's role. Three classroom evaluation instruments for teachers and students are provided. Chapter iii defines Fox's innovative approaches to curriculum development and evaluation as he sought to relate curriculum to new values, styles of life, and motivation of the young. Chapter iv presents methods of diagnosing the human dynamics of the school. Tools for assessing the building climate, classroom group, student-teacher relationship, and school-home orientation are provided. Chapter v explores Fox's ideas about administrator and teacher leadership and examines tools for educational leaders for planning, decisions, and actions. "This book is a beginning study in topological psychology, enabling the student of psychology to make a fresh start in the understanding and utlization of Dr. Kurt Lewin's methods. Certain it is that all psychologists are interested in Dr. Lewin's major attempt to employ new methods of formulating and mathematizing in psychology in such a way as to retain the basic and primary demands of psychology itself. His dynamic theories lead to certain derivatives whose experimental confirmation rightly is held to be of special significance. In these earlier studies the constructs have been kept semimathematical, as against nonmathematical (which would be confusing) or a display of mathematical technicalities that become devoid of psychological meaning. The work moves forward with two feet upon the ground: one theoretical or conceptual, the other experimental. The why and the what are brought into mutual relationship; they are made to serve each other. The validity of this process rests upon its demonstrated fruitfulness. That Lewin and his colleagues are willing to attack the hard problems that lie at the heart of social psychology (although out on the periphery of psychology as revealed to most pre-Gestalt workers), is in itself encouraging"--Preface.
