In the Life of D.H. Lawrence, Keith Sagar makes use of the 5,000 extant Lawrence letters by weaving them together in an immediate, dramatic, and highly readable narrative. Much new information about Lawrence's relationships with his mother and father, his girlfriends and his later friends such as Dorothy Brett and Harry Crosby, plus a new account of the origins of Lady Chatterley's Lover, is included in this volume. A lavish collection of photographs of Lawrence, his friends and family, as well as facsimiles of illustrated letters and color reproductions of Lawrence's own art, completes Sagar's vivid portrait of his subject and allows the reader a close and personal view -- Back cover

In a recent interview Hughes said, 'one of the great problems that poetry works at is to renew life, renew the poet's own life, and, by implication, renew the life of the people, if they can respond to the way he has done it for himself'. This book is an attempt to contribute to such a response. The focus is on Hughes's poetry since Crow (1970). The difficulty of this later work often lies in its extreme simplicity, stripped of the surface 'poetry' the conventional critic is trained to respond to

This new collection of Keith Sagar's writings on the poetry of D H Lawrence includes many new interpretations of well-known poems. It ends with a year-by-year checklist of reviews and criticism of Lawrence's poems, from 1913 to the present. Though much has been written about Lawrence's poetry (as revealed by the several hundred entries in the book's checklist of criticism), there have been relatively few full length studies. This book deals with the whole range of his poetry from his earliest poems, such as 'To Campions' and 'To Guelder Roses', through the poems inspired by his elopement with and subsequent marriage to Frieda Weekley (Look! We Have Come Through!), to the mature achievement, in free verse forms inspired by Walt Whitman, of Birds, Beasts and Flowers, Pansies and Last Poems. The genesis of the poems in Lawrence's life is explored; and there are new interpretations of his most memorable poems, such as 'The Wild Common', 'Piano', 'Song of a Man Who Has Come Through', Tortoises, 'Peach', 'Pomegranate', 'Snake', 'Bavarian Gentians' and 'The Ship of Death'
