Asia's computer challenge : threat or opportunity for the United States & the world? by
Jason Dedrick(
)
12 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,009 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
From the advent of the first mainframe computers in the United States in the 1950s to the now ubiquitous personal computer, the computer industry has grown into a $500 billion international enterprise, affecting the way businesses compete and changing the face of the workplace. The Pacific Rim has become a hot spot in this evolution, with the growth of Japanese and East Asian companies posing both threats and opportunities for U.S. corporate giants. How did the industry evolve into its present global structure? Why have some Asian countries succeeded more than others? In Asia's Computer Challenge, Jason Dedrick and Kenneth L. Kraemer delve into these questions and emerge with an explanation of the rapid rise of the computer industry in the Asia-Pacific region. Offering a systematic comparison of the historical development of the computer industries of Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, the book provides a solid basis for examining the relative influence of both government policy and market forces on the development of computer enterprises within each country. This probing inquiry into the quickly evolving computer industry and the competition it creates between countries and companies will appeal to scholars of business and economics, technology studies, Japan and East Asia studies, and to a broader audience of professionals within the computer industry, particularly those working for global companies

Global e-commerce : impacts of national environment and policy by
Kenneth L Kraemer(
Book
)
19 editions published between 2006 and 2011 in English and held by 551 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Are the Internet and e-commerce truly revolutionizing business practice? This book explodes the transformation myth by demonstrating that the Internet and e-commerce are in fact being adapted by firms to reinforce their existing relationships with customers, suppliers, and business partners. Detailed case studies of eight countries show that, rather than creating a borderless global economy, e-commerce strongly reflects existing local patterns of commerce, business, and consumer preference, and its impact therefore varies greatly by country."--Jacket

Computers and banking : electronic funds transfer systems and public policy by
Kent W Colton(
Book
)
13 editions published between 1979 and 1996 in English and held by 510 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Electronic funds transfer (EFT) systems include a wide range of computer-based payment systems and sources that substitute electronic and digital transfers for movements of cash and paper checks. A few years ago some people were predict ing that EFT would replace paper money and coins entirely and that we would soon be a "checkless" and' 'cashless" society. Such sweeping changes have not occurred, but a slower evolution is clearly underway. Although checks, cur rency, and coin are likely to be here for many years to come, EFT is becoming an established part of our worldwide payment transfer system, and the implications and consequences of this technology are real. They include: • Alterations in personal finance and in the process of purchasing and paying for consumer goods and services. • Changes in the structure of financial and retail organizations and their mode of interaction in the marketplace. • Modifications in the flow of funds in our society and in the interactions among economic institutions. • Alterations in the prospects for invasion of personal privacy, perpetration of fraud and theft, and violation of antitrust regulations. • Changes in the regulatory and competitive balance among the numerous financial institutions in the United States. Such alterations foretell important impacts on people and society. Benefits are forthcoming, but the costs will also be real

Book
)
3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 281 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
""Computerization movement" (CM) refers to a special kind of social and technological movement that promotes the adoption of computing within organizations and society. ... Through theoretical analyses, systematic empirical studies, field-based studies, and case studies of specific technologies, the book shows CMs to be driven by Utopian visions of technology that become part of the "ether" within society. The empirical studies presented here show the need for designers, users, and the media to be aware that CM rhetoric can propose grand visions that never become part of a reality and reinforce the need for critical and scholarly review of promising new technologies."--Back cover
