Saint Paul at the movies : the apostle's dialogue with American culture by Robert Jewett( )

7 editions published between 1993 and 1998 in English and held by 924 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Robert Jewett presents an original and fascinating entry into Pauline theology through the use of contemporary classics. Each major Pauline theme is paired with a companion film. By pointing out both similarities and divergences between the two, Jewett adds to the understanding and appreciation of both media".--Richard A. Blake, S.J., teacher and film reviewer

The American monomyth by Robert Jewett( Book )

12 editions published between 1977 and 1988 in English and held by 818 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jewett and Lawrence examine the American monomyth in popular culture and mass media, driven by recurrent patterns in television, movies, real-life legends, and books. They find tales of redemption that include selfless servants who impassively give their lives for others and zealous crusaders who destroy evil. Starting with the Bionic Woman Jamie Sommers and continuing to such examples as Star Trek, Playboy, Superman, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Little House on the Prairie, the authors find a myth that is rooted in pop materials. It replaces the Christ figure, which has been eroded by scientific explanation, but allows the American culture to remember "supersaviors" who are woven throughout society
The Captain America complex : the dilemma of zealous nationalism by Robert Jewett( Book )

Captain America and the crusade against evil : the dilemma of zealous nationalism by Robert Jewett( Book )

16 editions published between 2002 and 2004 in English and held by 725 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This critical book, however, is also immensely constructive. As Jewett and Lawrence point out, the same biblical tradition that allows for crusading mentalities also contains a critique of zealous warfare and a profound vision of impartial justice. This tradition of prophetic realism derives from the human side of the biblical heritage, and the authors trace its manifestations within the American experience, including its supreme embodiment in Abraham Lincoln. Isaiah's "swords into plowshares" image is carved on the walls of the United Nations building, thus standing at the center of a globally focused civil religion
Romans : a commentary by Robert Jewett( Book )

14 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 705 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Deeply conversant in the full range of questions and interpretations of the letter, Jewett's commentary explores the crucial and controverted passages that have always animated studies of Romans
The myth of the American superhero by John Shelton Lawrence( Book )

12 editions published between 2002 and 2007 in English and held by 570 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Arguing that the superhero is the antidemocratic counterpart of the classical "monomyth" described by Joseph Campbell, the authors show that the American version of the monomyth derives from tales of redemption. In settings where institutions and elected leaders always fail, the American monomyth offers heroes who combine elements of the selfless servant with the lone, zealous crusader who destroys evil. Taking the law into their own hands, these unelected figures assume total power to rid the community of its enemies, thus comprising a distinctively American form of pop fascism." "Drawing widely from books, films, TV programs, video games, and places of superhero worship on the World Wide Web, the authors trace the development of the American superhero during the twentieth century and expose the mythic patterns behind the most successful elements of pop culture. Lawrence and Jewett challenge readers to reconsider the relationship of this myth to traditional religious and social values, and they show how, ultimately, these antidemocratic narratives gain the spiritual loyalties of their audiences, in the process inviting them to join in crusades against evil." "Finally, the authors pose this provocative question: Can we take a holiday from democracy in our lives of fantasy and entertainment while preserving our commitment to democratic institutions and ways of life?"--Jacket

Saint Paul returns to the movies : triumph over shame by Robert Jewett( Book )

9 editions published between 1998 and 2001 in English and held by 393 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jewett selects ten major Hollywood movies that focus on the topic of shame - The Prince of Tides, Babette's Feast, Forrest Gump, Mr. Holland's Opus, Groundhog Day, Babe, Edge of the City, The Firm, Unforgiven, and The Shawshank Redemption - and interprets them in the light of what Saint Paul's letters say on the subject. Jewett's compelling analysis not only shows the cinema's unique capacity to unmask one of the deepest dilemmas of the human heart, but also offers the revolutionary view that the triumph of grace over shameful status, circumstances, and experiences lies at the heart of Paul's theology."--Jacket

Mission and menace : four centuries of American religious zeal by Robert Jewett( Book )

6 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 260 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Observing that Abraham Lincoln once described the United States as an "almost chosen nation," Robert Jewett offers a critical survey of the history of America's self-understanding as a nation enjoying both divine blessing and a God-given vocation as a "city on a hill." From beginnings at Jamestown, Jewett shows, the American mythology of divine mission has decisively shaped both domestic and foreign policies of the developing nation, and it remains one of the most important forces affecting the United States' role in the world today.
