(Re)membering Kenya by Kenya) Goethe-Institut (Nairobi( )

4 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 1,335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the critical questions that Kenyans have continuously asked is what went wrong in January and February 2008 with the ëpeaceí they had hitherto enjoyed. There have not been readily available answers to this fundamental question. The collection of papers presented in this book attempt to provide, as a starting point, possible explanations for the events of early 2008 including key background issues in Kenyan history since pre-independence times. Based on a series of public lectures titled (Re)membering Kenya organized by the volume editors together with Twaweza Communications and sponsored by the Goethe-Institut Kenya, the Institute for International Education and The Ford Foundation the lecture series became a way of trying to get scholars to engage meaningfully with the Kenyan public on critical matters pertaining to their nationhoodóeven if this entailed first calling to question the ëlieí about the very ideas and practices upon which that nationhood is assumed to stand. A key lesson drawn from the unfolding discussions at the Goethe-Institut Kenya was that the 2007 electionsí debacle was merely the cusp of momentous crises to do with among other issues, governance, law and order, Parliamentís abdication of its role in ensuring accountability from the Executive, dilemmas of identity and socio-economic marginality. The book is the first of three volumes under the (Re)membering Kenya series whose overall objective is to cast some new light on the various trajectories that informed the happenings of January 2008. The present volume brings together some of the best interpretative writing and suggestions on pertinent questions, past and present, ranging from the architecture of Kenyaís ethnicity, Kenyanness, generational competition, socialization and violence, iconic representations of identity to the ongoing debate on the efficacy of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC). It is hoped that the issues debated during the public lectures and documented herein will spur further discussions in other spaces within civil society organizations, among activists and in newspapers where the public might continue to expand their thinking on the complex task of (Re)membering Kenya

Race : the power of an illusion by Llewellyn Smith( Visual )

12 editions published between 2003 and 2017 in English and held by 1,289 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This series challenges one of our most fundamental beliefs: that humans come divided into a few distinct biological groups, telling an eye-opening tale of how what we assume to be normal, commonsense, even scientific, is actually shaped by our history, social institutions and cultural beliefs. Episode one explores how recent scientific discoveries have toppled the concept of biological race. Episode two questions the belief that race has always been with us. It traces the race concept to the European conquest of the Americas. Episode three focuses on how our institutions shape and create race

Adult illiteracy in the United States : a report to the Ford Foundation by Carman St. John Hunter( Book )

7 editions published between 1979 and 1985 in English and held by 1,027 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The result of a study on adult literacy undertaken by World Education, this book places the educational problem of adult literacy into the larger context of a changing society and offers a fresh perspective and a new way of thinking about the phenomenon. After defining functional literacy as the possession of skills perceived by particular persons as necessary to fulfill their own objectives, the book presents data on which and how many adults need help and characterizes these adults in ways designed to foster a deeper understanding of them. It next explores a wide range of efforts, both formal and informal, that have been undertaken to advance literacy and briefly discusses their effectiveness. Concentrating on the educational needs of the most disadvantaged poor, it recommends a national educational policy that would seek out and give support to community-based initiatives. The book concludes with a call for a long-range strategy that would not only involve programs for victims of social ills but that would enable national leaders and citizens at every level to address questions of social direction. Appendixes contain a summary of the recommendations and an extensive annotated bibliography. (Fl)

Faculty bargaining : change and conflict : a report prepared for the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education and the Ford Foundation by Joseph William Garbarino( Book )

7 editions published between 1975 and 1976 in English and held by 763 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Why do the faculty of colleges and universities organize? Is faculty unionism inevitable? Is faculty unionism irreversible? What is the impact of faculty unionism? These four questions are central to this comprehensive review of experience to date with collective bargaining. Collective bargaining is viewed in the context of rapid changes in colleges and universities in the 1960's and 1970's that have threatened traditional relationships among professors, their institutions, and other sectors of society. Among the subjects discussed are traditional forms of faculty participation in institutional governance; the development, strengths, and weaknesses of some of the national organizations that now represent faculty members as bargaining agents; the changes in faculty relationships to their institutions that have occurred with the development of collective bargaining; and some of the educational, political and administrative issues that are raised by the new bargaining procedures. One chapter focuses attention on faculty bargaining at American's 2-year colleges. Another chapter reviews the British experience with collective bargaining. The author concludes, among other things, that collective bargaining will be a feature of higher education for the foreseeable future. (Author)

Grief, long-standing racial tensions and renewed anger bring residents together to hold vigil and protest this latest tragedy. Empowered parents, artists, and teachers from around the country come together as freedom fighters. As the National Guard descends on Ferguson with military grade weaponry, these young community members become the torchbearers of a new resistance."--Container
