Immigration in a changing economy : California's experience by Kevin F McCarthy( )

10 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and held by 1,800 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

California and its economy continue to draw benefits from immigration. However, a combination of much larger immigration flows and major changes in the state's economic environment have increased the costs of immigration, and unless current policies with regard to immigration and immigrants are changed, the benefits the state currently receives from immigrants may not continue. International immigration to California has steadily increased over the past 30 years and has profoundly affected the state's population and economy. Some observers of these changes are seeing the extreme diversity of California's population as the harbinger of where the nation is headed in the long term. For others, California has become the symbol of a major backlash against immigrants and immigration. How has California benefited from immigration? What impact have immigrants had on the state's job market? How have they affected the demand for federal and state services? What has been their educational and economic progress since their arrival? This book is the culmination of a comprehensive study of how immigration has changed over the past three decades. It assesses the impact immigration has had on the state's demography, economy, people, and institutions, with lessons to be drawn for other states, the nation, and even other countries

Adult illiteracy in the United States : a report to the Ford Foundation by Carman St. John Hunter( Book )

6 editions published between 1979 and 1985 in English and held by 1,058 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The result of a study on adult literacy undertaken by World Education, this book places the educational problem of adult literacy into the larger context of a changing society and offers a fresh perspective and a new way of thinking about the phenomenon. After defining functional literacy as the possession of skills perceived by particular persons as necessary to fulfill their own objectives, the book presents data on which and how many adults need help and characterizes these adults in ways designed to foster a deeper understanding of them. It next explores a wide range of efforts, both formal and informal, that have been undertaken to advance literacy and briefly discusses their effectiveness. Concentrating on the educational needs of the most disadvantaged poor, it recommends a national educational policy that would seek out and give support to community-based initiatives. The book concludes with a call for a long-range strategy that would not only involve programs for victims of social ills but that would enable national leaders and citizens at every level to address questions of social direction. Appendixes contain a summary of the recommendations and an extensive annotated bibliography. (Fl)

Faculty bargaining : change and conflict : a report prepared for the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education and the Ford Foundation by Joseph William Garbarino( Book )

7 editions published between 1975 and 1976 in English and held by 810 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Why do the faculty of colleges and universities organize? Is faculty unionism inevitable? Is faculty unionism irreversible? What is the impact of faculty unionism? These four questions are central to this comprehensive review of experience to date with collective bargaining. Collective bargaining is viewed in the context of rapid changes in colleges and universities in the 1960's and 1970's that have threatened traditional relationships among professors, their institutions, and other sectors of society. Among the subjects discussed are traditional forms of faculty participation in institutional governance; the development, strengths, and weaknesses of some of the national organizations that now represent faculty members as bargaining agents; the changes in faculty relationships to their institutions that have occurred with the development of collective bargaining; and some of the educational, political and administrative issues that are raised by the new bargaining procedures. One chapter focuses attention on faculty bargaining at American's 2-year colleges. Another chapter reviews the British experience with collective bargaining. The author concludes, among other things, that collective bargaining will be a feature of higher education for the foreseeable future. (Author)
