Theatre for children in the United States; a history by Nellie McCaslin( Book )

9 editions published between 1971 and 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 811 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this book has been to trace the history of the children's theatre movement from its beginnings to the present time. The earliest evidence of children's theatre is found in the social and educational centers of the larger cities. Originating in the social settlements at the turn of the century, drama was first introduced to provide wholesome entertainment and a method of learning for the youngest immigrants and most disadvantaged children in our society. By the 30's, schools, colleges, and universities were beginning to play an important role in the development of children's theatre. The American Educational Theatre Association (aeta) was founded in the mid 30's, giving professional recognition to a growing field of interest and approval of the subject for serious study. Less than a decade later, the Children's Theatre Conference was formed as a major division of aeta. Classes, workshops, and graduate courses in children's theatre soon provided training in techniques. Like its adult counterpart, children's theatre is an art form. Its values are appropriate entertainment for young people, opportunity for learning, and appreciation of the theatre arts. A bibliography is included. (Author/CK)
