Aurora Leigh by
Elizabeth Barrett Browning(
Book
)
288 editions published between 1856 and 2020 in 7 languages and held by 2,781 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Aurora Leigh is the foremost example of the mid-nineteenth-century poem of contemporary life. This verse-novel is a richly detailed representation of the early Victorian age. The social panorama extends from the slums of London, through the literary world, to the upper classes and a number of superb satiric portraits: an aunt with rigidly conventional notions of female education; Romney Leigh, the Christian socialist; Lord Howe, the amateur radical; Sir Blaise Delorme, the ostentatious Roman Catholic; and the unscrupulous society beauty Lady Waldemar." "However, the dominant presence in the work is the narrator, Aurora Leigh herself. From early years in Italy and adolescence in the West Country to the vocational choices, creative struggles, and emotional entanglements of her first decade of adult life, Aurora Leigh develops her ideas on art, love, God, the Woman Question, and society." "This is the first critically edited and fully annotated edition for almost a century."--Jacket

The author has tried to augment that study so as to produce in addition of the letters that would make them genuinely available both to scholars into interested readers in general. Here we have not only both sides of the correspondence but contained within it, in the words of the two lovers themselves, both of them poets, one of the few love stories from real life that can compete in plot interest with the art of the fictioner

Robert Browning(

7 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 952 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The face of Robert Browning gives nothing away -- handsome and polished, it offers no hold to those who would pry into the soul behind. Its metallic mirror gives us back ourselves. But the face of Elizabeth Barret Browning speaks openly of her sufferings -- of ill health, of an iron father, of miscarriages -- yet speaking in the accents of courage and good sense. Any woman of sensitivity and talent can imagine herself as Elizabeth, in the hope that she might get as much as did Elizabeth out of a life which sometimes seemed to offer so little. No man can imagine himself as Robert. And if that is because genius is a mystery, it is even more because Robert Browning is a mystery. - p. 1

Into their clandestine love letters, among the most famous in literary history, leading to their elopment in 1846, the two poets, Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett, poured the full resources of their minds and hearts. Karlin's selection based on a fresh examination of the original manuscripts, allows the reader to follow this story in all its scope and richness: the neurotic presence of Barrett's father and the demands both poets made on each other, after each has waited years for the intimate adventure in which they embarked, probing each others' needs and desires, passions and anxieties in letters complex and subtle in their details

Casa Guidi windows by
Elizabeth Barrett Browning(
Book
)
25 editions published between 1851 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 451 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In 1847, Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-61) moved with her new husband to an apartment in Florence, in the wake of perhaps the most famous literary courtship of the nineteenth century. She soon took to calling their home the Casa Guidi. From there, she observed the events of the early Risorgimento. It was at this time that she produced some of her finest work, including Aurora Leigh and Casa Guidi Windows. An impressionistic and thoroughly atypical landmark in the Romantic canon, the latter was written in two parts, separated by several years. Beginning with the memory of a singing child and a lush description of Florence's beauty, the first part explores the air of optimism that permeates both the city and the narrator. By the second, disillusionment is rife: Florence has become the scene of demonstrations and broken political promises. This reissue of the 1851 first edition includes Barrett Browning's own introduction
