Difference and repetition by Gilles Deleuze( Book )

200 editions published between 1968 and 2019 in 8 languages and held by 2,562 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Difference and Repetition, a brilliant exposition of the critique of identity, has come to be considered a contemporary classic in philosophy and one of Deleuze's most original works. Successfully defended in 1969 as Deleuze's main thesis toward his Doctorat d'Etat at the Sorbonne, the work has been central in initiating the shift in French thought away from Hegel and Marx, towards Nietzsche and Freud. The text follows the development of two central concepts, those of pure difference and complex repetition. It shows how the two concepts are related - difference implying divergence and decentering, and repetition implying displacement and disguising. In its explication the work moves deftly between Hegel, Kierkegaard, Freud, Althusser, and Nietzsche to establish a fundamental critique of Western metaphysics. Difference and Repetition has become essential to the work of literary critics and philosophers alike, and this translation his been long awaited
What is philosophy? by Gilles Deleuze( Book )

89 editions published between 1991 and 2019 in 4 languages and held by 2,415 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Called by many France's leading intellectual, Gilles Deleuze is one of the most important philosophers in the Western world. His acclaimed works and celebrated collaborations with Felix Guattari have established him as a seminal figure in the fields of philosophy, cultural studies, and literary theory. The publication of What Is Philosophy? marks the culmination of Deleuze's career. Deleuze and Guattari situate philosophy in the realm of problems and possibilities. The book presents a revolutionary theory of philosophy and in the process develops a new understanding of the interrelationships among philosophy, science, and the arts. The authors differentiate philosophy from science and the arts, seeing each domain as a means of confronting chaos, and challenging the common view that philosophy is an extension of logic. They discuss the similarities and distinctions between creative and philosophical writing. Fresh anecdotes from the history of philosophy illuminate the book, along with engaging discussions of composers, painters, writers, and architects. A milestone in Deleuze's collaboration with Guattari, What Is Philosophy? brings new perspectives to Deleuze's studies of cinema, literature, painting, and music, while setting a brilliant capstone upon his intellectual corpus. Newcomers to the two thinkers' writings will relish the book's scope, energy, and inventiveness; veteran followers will appreciate Deleuze and Guattari's fierce determination to grasp the elusive meaning of philosophy in this, their last and most remarkable joint effort

What is needed for something new to appear? According to Gilles Deleuze, one of the most brilliant contemporary philosophers, this question of "novelty" is the major problem posed by Bergson's work. In this companion book to Bergson's Matter and Memory, Deleuze demonstrates both the development and the range of three fundamental Bergsonian concepts: duration, memory, and the élan vital. Bergsonism is also important to an understanding of Deleuze's own work, influenced as it is by Bergson.Gilles Deleuze is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Paris VIII, Vincennes/Saint Denis. Among his most recent books in translation are Nietzsche and Philosophy, Cinema: Image Movement and, with Felix Guattari, Anti-Oedipus, Kafka, and One Thousand Plateaus.Hugh Tomlinson is the translator of Deleuze's Nietzsche and Philosophy and Kant's Critical Philosophy. Anticipating his work on cinema, the baroque, and literary criticism, the book can be read not only as a study of Bacon's paintings but also as a crucial text within Deleuze's broader philosophy of art. In it, Deleuze creates a series of philosophical concepts, each of which relates to a particular aspect of Bacon's paintings but at the same time finds a place in the "general logic of sensation.""--Jacket

Expressionism in philosophy : Spinoza by Gilles Deleuze( Book )

77 editions published between 1968 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 1,078 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this ... work Gilles Deleuze ... reflects on one of the figures of the past who has most influenced his own sweeping reconfiguration of the tasks of philosophy. Deleuze's ... text shows how current definitions of philosophy do not apply to Spinoza: a solitary thinker (yet scandalous and hated), he conceived of philosophy as an enterprise of liberation and radical demystification much as did Leibniz or, later Nietzsche. Spinoza confronts the grand philosophical problems that are still current today: the comparative role of ontology (the theory of substance), of epistemology (the theory of ideas), and of political anthropology (the theory of modes, passions, and actions). The goal of this book is to determine the rapport among the univocity of Being in the theory of substance; the production of truth and the genesis of sense in the theory of ideas; and practical joy (or the elimination of the sad passions) and the selective organization of the passions in the theory of modes"--From Amazon.com, viewed August 6, 2021

"Essays Critical and Clinical is the final work of the late Gilles Deleuze, one of the most important figures in contemporary philosophy. It includes essays, all newly revised or published here for the first time, on such diverse literary figures as Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, D.H. Lawrence, T.E. Lawrence, Samuel Beckett, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Alfred Jarry, and Lewis Carroll, as well as philosophers such as Plato, Spinoza, Kant, Nietzsche, and Heidegger. As Proust said, great writers invent a new language within language, but in such a way that language in its entirety is pushed to its limit or its own "outside."" "In Essays Critical and Clinical, Deleuze is concerned with the delirium - the process of Life - that lies behind this invention, as well as the loss that occurs, the silence that follows, when this delirium becomes a clinical state."--Jacket

Annotation
Spinoza, practical philosophy by Gilles Deleuze( Book )

53 editions published between 1981 and 2015 in 7 languages and held by 730 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The policing of families by Jacques Donzelot( Book )

12 editions published between 1977 and 1998 in 4 languages and held by 699 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In The Policing of Families, Jacques Donzelot, a student and colleague of Michel Foucault, offers an account of public intervention in the regulation of family affairs since the eighteenth century, showing how this intervention effected radical changes in the structure of what had traditionally been a private domain. Treating the family as a focal point of multiple social practices and discourses, Donzelot examines the role of philanthropy, social work, compulsory mass education, and psychiatry in the control of family life and describes the transformation of mothers into agents of the state. Donzelot also provides a critique of Marxist, psychoanalytic, and feminist conceptions of the family and shows how the policies of the state and the professions molded working-class and middle-class families in quite different ways."--Jacket
