A time of terror : how democratic societies respond to revolutionary violence by J. Bowyer Bell( Book )

16 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 943 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The secret army : the IRA, 1916-1979 by J. Bowyer Bell( Book )

31 editions published between 1979 and 1990 in English and held by 709 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Irish Republican Army (IRA) (Irish: Óglaigh na hÉireann[1]) was an Irish republican revolutionary military organisation. It was descended from the Irish Volunteers, an organisation established on 25 November 1913 that staged the Easter Rising in April 1916. In 1919, the Irish Republic that had been proclaimed during the Easter Rising was formally established by an elected assembly (Dáil Éireann), and the Irish Volunteers were recognised by Dáil Éireann as its legitimate army. Thereafter, the IRA waged a guerrilla campaign against British rule in Ireland in the 1919?21 Irish War of Independence. Following the signing in 1921 of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which ended the War of Independence, a split occurred within the IRA. Members who supported the treaty formed the nucleus of the Irish National Army founded by IRA leader Michael Collins. However, much of the IRA was opposed to the treaty. The anti-treaty IRA fought a civil war with their former comrades in 1922?23, with the intention of creating a fully independent all-Ireland republic. Having lost the civil war, this group remained in existence, with the intention of overthrowing both the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland and achieving the Irish Republic proclaimed in 1916."--Wikipedia

5 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 573 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Murders on the Nile takes us into a murky underworld of Egyptian exiles, Palestinian and Iranian militants, and Arabs waging jihad in Afghanistan - all of them joined together by a dream of violence, freedom and vengeance. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, these Islamist zealots had filled their ranks with holy men and hijackers, charismatic preachers and street thugs. Their yearning for the paradise of an imagined past had become a conspiracy found not only along the Nile, but ultimately along the Hudson as well."--Jacket

Active, covert, illicit organizations present severe methodology problems for researchers, and the The IRA, 1968-2000 addresses a contemporary movement that, especially during the past decade - the endgame of the peace process - has remained secretive."--Jacket
Assassin! by J. Bowyer Bell( Book )

10 editions published between 1979 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 463 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Assassination as a political act has a long history, predating the murder of Julius Caesar and continuing into our own time. The murder of the mighty has long fascinated artists and rebels but only rarely has it been studied in a scholarly manner. In Assassin, J. Bowyer Bell combines existing historical evidence with years of personal interviews with terrorists in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. The result is an incisive study of that enigmatic figure, the revolutionary killer. As Bell makes clear, the motives of the actors, and effectiveness of assassination, vary widely across time and place. Assassination in many parts of the world has not only been a normal political act, rational, explicable, but also often effective, in some cases taking fewer lives in the transfer of power than an election. Likewise, there have been all kinds of assassins--personal, psychopathic, professional, ranging from lonely failures trying to make their mark to authorized agents of the state. Using the assassination of Henry IV of France as a historical backdrop, Bell writes about contemporary political murder from the perspective of one who has studied the subject of political violence for decades. Bell has met with or known well the perpetrators, conspirators, and intended victims of assassination who have escaped. His interviewees include a radical Irish revolutionary leader, an American Arabist diplomat, a spokesman for the PLO, and the president of a Mozambique liberation movement. The itinerary of his investigative journeys covers most of the flashpoints of contemporary political violence. The people and places studied here at firsthand are engaged in a deadly game. The attrition rate is often high, the power fleeting, and the consequences often unforeseen. If past is prologue, assassination is to be with us for years to come. The volume will be essential reading for those engaged in the prevention of political violence and terror as well as historians and political scientists."--Provided by publisher
