Spoils of the Kingdom : clergy misconduct and religious community by Anson D Shupe( )

9 editions published between 1900 and 2007 in English and held by 1,642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Spoils of the Kingdom, Anson Shupe investigates clergy misconduct as it has recently unfolded across five faith-based groups. Looking at episodes of abuse in the Roman Catholic, Mormon, African American Protestant, white Evangelical Protestant, and First Nations communities, Spoils of the Kingdom tackles hard questions not only about the sexual abuse of women and children, but also about economic frauds perpetrated by church leaders (including embezzlement, mis-represented missions, and outright theft) as well as cases of excessively authoritarian control of members health, lifestyles, employment, and politics._x000B_Drawing on case evidence, Shupe employs classical and modern social exchange theories to explain the institutional dynamics of clergy misconduct. He argues that there is an implicit contract of reciprocity and compliance between congregants and religious leaders that, when amplified by the charismatic awe often associated with religious authorities, can lead to misconduct

Televangelism, power, and politics on God's frontier by Jeffrey K Hadden( Book )

11 editions published between 1988 and 2001 in English and held by 945 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The relationship between religion and politics is given timely analysis by sociologists Hadden (University of Virginia) and Shupe (University of Texas). Focusing on the electronic-communications revolution, characterizing it as a catalyst for social movements, they see evidence that "the marriage of evangelical Christianity and politics is not a passing fad ... and may be nothing short of a second Protestant reformation." They note that "Electric Christianity" is a hybrid, transmitting a message to mostly nonmainstream Americans that is not primarily theological but that supports the electronic empires of the highly organized transmitters. Recent scandals involving electronic evangelists are cited as cases in point that confessions of misbehavior rarely alienate loyal followers. Since one of the current presidential candidates is televangelist Pat Robertson, this picture of a New Christian Right emerging as a political force is especially thought provoking. Hadden and Shupe present an insightful view of an apparently formidable constituency. First serial to Boston Review; author tour. -- Publishers Weekly

Child-molesting priests, embezzled church treasures, philandering ministers and rabbis, even church-endorsed pyramid schemes that defraud gullible parishioners of millions of dollars: for the past decade, clergy misconduct has seemed continually to be in the news. Is there something about religious organizations that fosters such misbehavior? Bad Pastors presents a range of new perspectives and solidly grounded data on pastoral abuse, investigating sexual misconduct, financial improprieties, and political and personal abuse of authority. Rather than focusing on individuals who misbehave, the v

"This comprehensive analysis offers the first up-to-date analysis of sexual, economic, and authoritative clergy malfeasance across faiths and denominational authority structures. Drawing on examples taken from antiquity up until the present day, and using reports by historians, theologians, church spokespersons, therapists, social scientists, and journalists, Shupe critically evaluate clergy deviant behavior, dividing it into various types. He also makes use of the therapeutic literature, addressing victimization at the level of the individual, church, and community at large. In this way, he compares the response of the clergy to victims' attempts to mobilize movements calling for church reform
