Bel-Ami by Guy de Maupassant( Book )

1,482 editions published between 1800 and 2018 in 31 languages and held by 7,613 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Maupassant's second novel, Bel-Ami (1885), is the story of a ruthlessly ambitious young man (Georges Duroy, christened "Bel-Ami" by his female admirers) making it to the top in fin-de-siecle Paris. It is a novel about money, sex, and power, set against the background of the politics of the French colonization of North Africa. It explores the dynamics of an urban society uncomfortably close to our own and is a devastating satire of the sleaziness of contemporary journalism. Bel-Ami enjoys the status of an authentic record of the apotheosis of bourgeois capitalism under the Third Republic. But the creative tension between its analysis of modern behavior and its identifiably late nineteenth-century fabric is one of the reasons why Bel-Ami remains one of the finest French novels of its time, as well as being recognized as Maupassant's greatest achievement as a novelist. - Back cover

An intensely personal novel that plays itself out in a closed and intimate circle. It is a study of jealousy, suspicion and love within a family. The most explosive passions are presented with the greatest delicacy and most consummate artistry

Boule de suif by Guy de Maupassant( Book )

732 editions published between 1880 and 2018 in 15 languages and held by 2,141 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Like death by Guy de Maupassant( Book )

444 editions published between 1889 and 2017 in 19 languages and held by 1,689 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Olivier Bertin is at the height of his career as a painter. After making his name with his Cleopatra, he went on to establish himself as "the chosen painter of the Parisiennes, the most adroit and ingenious artist to reveal their grace, their figures, and their souls." And though his hair may be white, he remains a handsome, vigorous, and engaging bachelor, a prized guest at every table and salon. Anne, the comtesse de Guilleroy, is a youthful forty, the wife of a busy politician. The painter and the comtesse have been lovers for many years. Anne's daughter, Annette--the spitting image of her mother in her lovely youth--has finished her schooling and is returning to Paris. Her parents are putting together an excellent match. Everything is as it should be--until the painter and comtesse are each seized by an agonizing suspicion, like death ... In its devastating depiction of the treacherous nature of love, Like Death is more than the equal of Swann's Way. Richard Howard's new translation brings out all the penetration and poetry of this masterpiece of nineteenth-century fiction"--

Alien hearts by Guy de Maupassant( Book )

287 editions published between 1890 and 2016 in 8 languages and held by 1,598 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Alien Hearts "was the last novel that Guy de Maupassant completed before succumbing to the effects of tertiary syphilis of which he was to die at forty-three. It is the most original and surprising of his novels and the one in which he attains a truly tragic perception of the wounded human heart. "Alien Hearts "is the story of lovers bound by bitterness as much as by passion. Maupassant's hero falls for a woman of the world, a glacially dazzling beauty whose past with an abusive husband leads her to hold him-and everyone-at arm's length. He seeks solace with a servant girl, but remains racked by pointless infatuation

Le Horla, et autres contes d'angoisse by Guy de Maupassant( Book )

425 editions published between 1887 and 2017 in 16 languages and held by 1,333 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

184 editions published between 1888 and 2016 in 9 languages and held by 1,218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Afloat courts risk in both form and content, making itself up as it goes along. As a work of art, it is as fresh and startling as the paintings of Maupassant's great contemporaries van Gogh and Gauguin."--Jacket

"Comment à force de bluff, de supposés miracles et de faux certificats délivrés par des médecins complaisants on parvient à fabriquer une ville d'eaux et à lotir au plus haut prix un paysage entier en exploitant la crédulité des uns et en s'appuyant sur la malhonnêteté des autres."--Cover
