"American millionaire Chester Royde is in Scotland with his new bride Carrie and sister Myrtle to research Carrie's Scottish ancestry. Their new "relatives" turn out to be rather more authentically Scottish than they bargained for. Ben Nevis, Laird of Glenbogle Castle, is cash-strapped and fiercely protective of his lands and the Macdonald clan spirit, but he's not above attempts to marry heiress Myrtle to one of his brawny sons. When a group of hikers stumble on his moor and spoil a day's hunting, it sparks an all-out war between gentry and commoners."--Publisher's description

The first Octave of Sir Compton Mackenzie's autobiography appeared in 1963, on his eightieth birthday. Now, eight years later, he has completed the record of his life and times with the present volume, which brings the story forward to that same eightieth birthday. His many friends and readers will rejoice that his extraordinary energy and determination have trumphed over the handicap of failing eyesight. Octave 10 opens with the author returning to Scotland and setting up home in Drummond Place, Edinburgh. Of all the other countries he has lived in, one in particualr has had special meaning for him, and it was there that he returned in 1957, on behalf of the B.B.C., to take part in a television series called "The Glory That Was Greece". Active and alert as, Sir Compton also took part in the defence of Rupert Croft-Cooke against what he belived to be a most unjust police charge. and for a time he wrote the 'Sidelight' column in the Spectator, discussing topics as varied as the political situation in Cyprus, homosexuality, long distance lorry driving, and a memorable performance at Stratford. Equally varied were the books he was writing in this period among them Ben Nevis Goes East, Thin Ice, Mezzotint, Sublime Tobacco and Greece In My Life. In 1968 the Royal Society of Literature honoured him by making him a companion of Literature. But more than anything else it is the personalities in the Octave who reflect the remarkable range of Sir Compton's interests and sympathies - Gilbert Harding and Archbishop Makarios, James Thurber and Joy Adamson, Lord Thompson and Vyvyan Holland, Lord Boothby and Somerset Maugham, to mention only a few. His warmth towards people and his spirit when fighting for what he believes are the qualities that most distinguished this volume and characterise a man whose influence has become so widely felt wherever he has lived. The theme is of boyhood and growth instead of manhood and decay. The hero, Mark Lidderdale, is the son of a parish priest in London, one of the martyrs of the ritualistic controversy of the eighties. His own education for the priesthood through the Catholic Movement in the Church of England is the substance of the book, which is but an overture to The Parson's Progress
Greek memories by Compton Mackenzie( Book )

18 editions published between 1932 and 1987 in English and Undetermined and held by 246 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Compton Mackenzie was already a celebrated writer at the start of the First World War, commissioned into the Royal Marines, He soon found himself recruited by the British Secret Service, becoming 'our man in Greece'. After the war, Mackenzie cashed in on the experience, writing a series of memoirs. Greek Memories, due to be published in November 1932, was the third and by far the most revealing. Breaking every rule in the book, Mackenzie included secret letters and documents, named serving SIS officers, exposed the cover used by agents in foreign capitals and revealed the real name of the wartime chief of the British Secret Service - Mansfield Cumming. This was a step too far for the authorities. Mackenzie was hauled before the courts and Greek Memories was banned - not a single copy went on sale. Greek Memories was eventually re-published in 1939, stripped of all controversial material, but the original remained banned. Now, for the first time, here is Mackenzie's memoir as it should have been told - uncensored, unrestricted and with no holds barred."--Publisher's website
