The pursuit of loneliness : American culture at the breaking point by Philip E Slater( Book )

56 editions published between 1970 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 2,550 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a classic indictment of American individualism and isolationism, Philip Slater analyzes the great ills of modern society-violence, competitiveness, inequality, and the national 'addiction' to technology
The glory of Hera; Greek mythology and the Greek family by Philip E Slater( Book )

41 editions published between 1968 and 2014 in English and held by 1,449 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The mother-son relationship is the focus of this major study of Greek family and Greek mythology. Greek women married early, were excluded from public life, and had little legal protection; yet females figure prominently in Greek mythology and the maternal goddesses are often represented as powerful and aggressive. It is Slater's contention that women in Greek society exerted a strong matriarchal dominance, which simultaneously encouraged and stymied the exploits of the fable Greed hero. Slater pursues the themes of narcissism and psychological ambivalence as he studies the myths of Zeus, Apollo, Orestes, and Dionysus; and particularly Heracles (literally, 'the glory of Hera'), whose several responses to his persecutory mother, Hera, exemplify every mode of response to maternal threat. In a concluding section, Slater suggests cross-cultural and contemporary parallels to the Greek situation, notably in the life of the American middle class today"--Back cover
The temporary society by Warren G Bennis( Book )

27 editions published between 1964 and 1998 in 3 languages and held by 1,290 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Here, readers will examine the implications of a world in which capitalism has become the primary economic model, in which freelance and contingent work arrangements predominate, where families struggle to reconcile home life and career, and governments take a backseat to the forces of global commerce. And the amazing part is that The Temporary Society was first published thirty years ago." "In these six essays - including "Democracy Is Inevitable," originally published in the Harvard Business Review - renowned business pundit Warren Bennis and Brandeis sociologist Philip Slater presented a take on the future that struck most of their contemporaries as being too farfetched. But in the years since, their predictions have materialized with uncanny accuracy, and Bennis has gone on to become one of today's most widely respected business thinkers." "Now, in this thirtieth anniversary edition of their seminal work, Bennis and Slater team up again to reflect on the events of the last three decades and look forward to the changes ahead."--Jacket

The chrysalis effect : the metamorphosis of global culture by Philip E Slater( )

14 editions published between 2008 and 2013 in English and held by 615 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Chrysalis Effect shows that the chaos and conflict experienced worldwide today are the result of a global cultural metamorphosis, one which has accelerated so rapidly in recent decades as to provoke fierce resistance. Many of the changes that have taken place in the last fifty years - the feminist movement, the rapid spread of democracy, the global economy, quantum physics, minority movements, the peace movement, the sexual revolution - are part of this cultural transformation. Contrary to accepted opinion, the conflict it engenders is not a struggle between Left and Right, or between the West and Islam, but one taking place within the Left, within the Right, within the West, within Islam, within everyone and every institution." "Currently, the world is in the middle of an adaptive process, moving toward a cultural ethos more appropriate to a species living in a shrinking world and in danger of destroying its habitat - a world that increasingly demands for its survival integrative thinking, unlimited communication, and global cooperation." "Today our world is caught in the middle of this disturbing transformative process - a process that creates confusion over values, loss of ethical certainty, and a bewildering lack of consensus about almost everything. The Chrysalis Effect provides an answer to the question: Why is the world in such a mess?"--Page 4 cover

A dream deferred : America's discontent and the search for a new democratic ideal by Philip E Slater( Book )

9 editions published between 1991 and 2000 in English and Italian and held by 507 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"While new governments around the world strive for democracy, the United States is becoming increasingly authoritarian and undemocratic. Sociologist Philip Slater shows how Congress-bashing and low voter turnout are symptoms of a larger decline in our faith in the sharing of power and information. He explains what democracy means at a personal level -- at work, in politics, in religion, and at home -- and how some of our most familiar and unquestioned assumptions tend to undermine it. In documenting the costs of American authoritarianism, Slater convincingly demonstrates that democratic processes, however messy and confusing, ultimately yield the most intelligent and flexible responses to a complex world.
