The book presents a cognitive approach to questionnaire design and includes timely information on the Internet and electronic resources. Comprehensive and concise, Asking Questions can be used to design questionnaires for any subject area, whether administered by telephone, online, mail, in groups, or face-to-face. A census that mirrors America : interim report by National Research Council (U.S.)( )

9 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 1,623 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume examines the Census Bureau's program of research and development of the 2000 census, focusing particularly on the design of the 1995 census tests. The tests in 1995 should serve as a prime source of information about the effectiveness and cost of alternative census design components. The authors concentrate on those aspects of census methodology that have the greatest impact on two chief objectives of census redesign: reducing differential undercount and controlling costs. Primary attention is given to processes for data collection, the quality of population coverage and public response, and the use of sampling and statistical estimation

A Framework and principles for international comparative studies in education by Norman M Bradburn( )

10 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 1,151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A framework is presented for use by the Board on International Comparative Studies in Education (bicse) in advising the National Center for Education Statistics and the National Science Foundation on United States participation in international comparative studies of education. The framework may also be helpful in identifying areas of research that are neglected. Also presented are principles recommended by the board for appraisal of proposals to conduct international education studies. The framework considers the value of United States participation in international studies and the kinds of studies that can be conducted. The measurement of educational achievement is reviewed, with attention to the many complications of international research. The long-term needs for United States participation and the timing and focus of proposed studies are considered. The recommended principles for appraisal of international studies apply to both explanatory and descriptive studies, whether of a qualitative or quantitative approach. Principles to be reviewed include considerations of relevance, design, analysis, and application. These principles have been adopted to guide the BICSE's appraisal of planned activities and for consideration by those interested in international comparative studies. Biographical summaries of 18 bicse members are provided. (Sld)

Side by side: integrated neighborhoods in America by Norman M Bradburn( Book )

5 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 846 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book reports the results of a study on the characteristics of racially integrated neighborhoods in an attempt to discover whether, and under what conditions, blacks and whites can live together. The communities studied had anywhere from one or two black families to more than ten percent. Integrated rural areas mostly in the South were not given as much attention as urban areas. Data were collected by interviewing neighborhood leaders and residents. In presenting the findings, the book first focuses on the profiles of six neighborhoods that represent the many others studied. Then, statistical estimates of the extent of integrated housing are given; in most cases, the whites far outnumber the blacks. White hostility toward black residents and demographic differences in the neighborhoods are analyzed. Racial attitudes and the participation in community institutions (schools, churches, etc.) are examined. In particular, the development and support of integrated schools are described. (Authors/JW)
