To live on earth; man and his environment in perspective by Sterling Brubaker( Book )

9 editions published between 1972 and 1973 in English and held by 997 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this text, written for the general reader rather than for the specialist, the accelerating use of man's environment is considered from agricultural, economic, demographic, and land and other resource use, with principal reference to the United States situation, but with reference to the world scale when appropriate. Environmental threats are classified into those that produce a loss of amenity (including aesthetic aspects), affect human health, produce genetic and reproductive changes, or influence ecological systems, particularly the "life support" factors. The same change may have effects in each of the categories proposed. Five major hazards (climatic change, radioactivity, pesticides, fertilizer misuse, and erosion) are treated in detail, and the pollution effect on the receiving media of water and air is examined. Possible methods of coping with these problems are reviewed, and some more general factors, primarily social, influencing the chances of action are then briefly surveyed. The bibliographies contain selected references to the problems discussed in the text. (Al)

Environmental quality analysis; theory and method in the social sciences by Resources for the Future( Book )

14 editions published between 1972 and 2011 in English and held by 771 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book brings together state-of-the-art papers by Resources for the Future staff members and by scholars associated with current programs of environmental quality research. Although some empirical findings are presented, the emphasis is primarily on theory and method. Divided into three parts, the initial section, "The Environment and Economic Growth," offers theoretical and empirical projections for the impact of growth on the natural environment. The second section, "Developing Management Programs," includes not only formal mathematical models that will aid in understanding the complex interrelationships among human activities and environmental systems, but also analyses of public policy alternatives. In the final part, "Designing Political and Legal Institutions," the contributors discuss questions of social choice, legal strategies, and power structure in environmental quality management. Of value to researchers, planners, and administrators in universities, government, and industry, the book demonstrates that progress is being made in the social sciences to meet the need for improved management of our common property resources.
